Random Traffic
« on: October 19, 2011, 01:33:07 pm »

I want to be able to setup a fort near a major road or river or near another settlement and have random traffic just passing through. Such thoroughfares and nearby settlements would have much more traffic then if I built a fort in the tundra or desert. A raft with a merchant or traveller coming down the river or a caravan not destined for my fort trekking down a road or a wanderer or minstrel or whatever. They do not necessarily need to want to interact with my fort. That way I can waylay said travellers and loot their corpses or be able to block said rivers and roads and demand tolls or just let them pass through.

I thinks it's nice and it'll reinforce the idea that you are not alone in the world, they would tend to follow roads and constructed tiles?
They would historic figures or just a name-less migrant or merchant?

Planned, mentioned in DF talk, may be included in caravan arc (years 2011 - 2020)

that's the problem with this game. Most suggestions are planned in the next decade or two.

Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

Toady once said that the DF  may be on the 1.00 version only after 20 year from this release.

Version 1 - we wait for more than 9 months, final bugfix release 12 months after .25 is realistic estimate.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html - Caravan Arc Releases: there are 9 planned, current ("Better town maps involving workshops/markets/shops based on world gen economic activities") is the smallest one.

12 months * 9 releases => final may be expected around 2020. I assume here that "feature creep" will continue[1].

EDIT: [1] Without feature creep it may be finished in 2012-2013 but it is unlikely.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

I'm pretty sure feature creep is the entire basis of Toady One's code...

Yeah, but only because our quantum holographic processors aren't good at making the relativistic calculations necessary for monitoring the speed of legendary dwarves making rock crafts.

Which reminds me, I should go back to researching solid densities and other material properties.

Anyone want a piece of Saguaro wood to test?  I still have a box full of it....

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
