Do people consider demigod to be cheating?
« on: October 19, 2011, 01:17:29 am »

I dunno, it just feels like cheating to me. I have trouble on hero difficulty, getting gangbanged by ambushes and whatnot, but if I were to play on demigod and find that it is perceived as cheating or cheap, I would feel bad. I know it's a matter of preference and whatnot, but I was just wondering the general populace's opinion on it.

Me personally? I sometimes struggle even on Demigod on a world with huge savagery.

I choose what I feel I can get away with on that world.

TBH, I feel like a lot of combat comes down to luck.  I've had a peasant character kill 20 bandits or fight off a bogeyman attack and a demigod character get killed by a badger. Screw it.  You're gonna die either way.

I don't think it's cheating. It's there for us to use. Might as well argue that using axes or adamantium or artifact are cheating simply because that makes the game slightly easier. All demigoding does is give you a small headstart.

And well, if you're still uncertain, ask yourself - Was Herakles cheating? Achilles? Odysseus, Perseus, Theseus? Demigodhood is a common trait of legends and mythical heroes. Why not your character as well?

I think it's a bit cheap, but ok under certain circumstances. Such as:

Breaching the place of eternal spoiler

Fighting in a world with massive savagery and a long worldgen (since only the strongest people remain)

Revenge against a megabeast

Genocide.

It's no more cheating than selecting Easy difficulty in other games, and even that comparison is a bit of a stretch. The game doesn't get any less brutal, you just get moar skillz to deal with it.

I never play above peasant. Hero and Demigod are very easy if you remove unnecessary stats or take companions. When I start I just grab a couple of peasant/soldier meat-shields and if I manage to survive the first couple of quests and mostly travel during the day it becomes hero easy anyway. The only time I started as a demigod was when I needed to bite the infected fingers and toes off of an existing adventurer, who ended up caving my face in.

Eh, its like picking your difficulty at the start of the game. If you don't want to have to grind your skills up most of the time then you can just choose Demigod and start kicking ass right away, if you want to play a harder game you pick peasant. Either way your going to get insanely powerful sooner or later.

Demigods and peasants alike die to bogeymen. Both can train up by savagely attacking random wildlife, throwing pebbles at walls until legendary (gotta write a macro for this someday), etc. The main difference for me is that peasants can't recruit companions until they kill something.

I used to be of the mindset that demigod was easy mode, until I realized that your starting stats determined your caps. Now I usually play demigod, not because of the starting boost, but because of the additional potential tacked on at the end.

If you find a square with an infinite pickup for both a and b you can just record picking up a few of the 'b' item and then hold down ctrl + P. You'll get enough of the item in about 15 seconds. Then you can just record throwing your 'f' item at the wall ~ 10 times and ctrl + P that for legendary in around 4-5 minutes. What gets to me is the time it takes for sneaking & swimming.

Building a fort with a repeater-driven danger room, swimming pool and archery range just for all this =p

And I'm sure I'll still die by getting punched in the face by a child.

I play demigod. Not because of starting out easier, but because the inherit higher attributes gives you a much higher maximum level cap. This is far more important to me then, say, starting with easier skills. Hell, I sometimes play with no starting skills on demigod, but I cannot bring myself to lower the cap.

I always play demigod, simply because training up a new character is quite boring. I play adventurer to fight megabeasts, bandits, and wolves, not throw rocks at a wall and swim in circles to get uber-stats. As long as my character is skilled enough to put up a decent fight against a group (I don't use companions 'cause I'm lazy an hate keeping up with them) then I'm happy. ^^^
