Your Fortress Mindset?
« on: October 18, 2011, 11:26:14 pm »

Or adventure mindset, if you swing that way.  Find a good picture or quote or something that describes your attitude and mindset as you go about your construction/destruction.

This is how I prepare for a new fort.

"Can a man who's warm understand one who's freezing?" - A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Quoted by the 40th dworf as he's being told his plump helmet ration was cut short, purely out of whim. And that he, unlike those who administer the mines, has no home in the main compound, but rather he has been relegated to the gold mines in the caverns below, shifting stone to the airlock, forever.

Eminem - Til I collapse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouqwtWrM2os

If the song doesn't already tell you, I often find myself with a determinator mindset. This means I could have nothing left but a single axedwarf and a bunch of measly peasents surrounded by the forces of !!FUN!!, and I will go "FUCK YOU CUNTS!" and have the peasents grab whatever the fuck they can use as a weapon, then have the axedwarf lead them to glory.

But of course, I also kill elf merchants on sight.

I always try to create a luxurious dwarven paradise overlooking an active volcano. If civilians didn't flee in terror at the sight of a gobbo, I'd line the entry traps and dodge pit with glass windows and put the legendary dining rooms and bedrooms right next to them.

This is less "picture your fort" but more "picture what you're thinking as you make your fort".  In your case a benevolent god figure would suffice.

From the day I picked up that pic(can't even remember why) I've wanted to create a fort like it. I still haven't managed to do that. Last time I tried?

Oh. You know.

What I aim for in my head. Sadly it always seems to end up looking more reminiscent of Corby.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

THis is what i'm currently aiming for. Pointy towers. I tend to change my goal with each fort.

This is less "picture your fort" but more "picture what you're thinking as you make your fort".  In your case a benevolent god figure would suffice.

In that case, it'd be either Mickey Mouse taking pictures with delighted kids, or Walt Disney counting cash from the till and laughing all the way to the bank.

I guess I can't make money off of admission tickets to Rururvad, so Mickey it is.

This is getting softly derailed...  It's not about your fort, it's about you as you make the fort.  If you had to depict yourself as an overlord, how would you portray yourself?  NOT your desired construction scheme.

Walt Disney counting cash from the till and laughing all the way to the bank.
I'm assuming you're trading the usual goblets and crafts and taking home raw platinum and gold, though?
