Speaking of derailing, I've got a project for computer science in which I get to use java to generate a picture of a hobby, and I choose DF. Any suggestions for a good picture to draw? In ASCII, of course.

Get it to draw a fortress!  Use different "modular" pieces and have the program tack on hallways and modules to create a 2D fort.

Hm... Not sure. So far I've "learned" how to make boxes, ovals, lines, and arcs. I could probablu study up on my own time, but let's be honest with ourselves, I'd much rather be forting. I am, however, willing to recreate a screenshot, so contributions would be pretty cool.

@ASCIt

Your image should involve magma, elephants, carp, HFS, magma, miasma, and many, many dead dwarves.  Probably with one live dwarf walled into a room with a lever.

"They come from the outside with their tusks and stomping feet, from the river with their scales and dreadful jaws, from the depths with screams and claws...  I may be the last dwarf alive...  It's time to pull the lever."

or, more simply

"Dwarf Fortress: Because "SimMoria" was too forgiving."

  Really though, a sorta 'Let's see how to put a new spin on military, traps, and fort design!' attitude. My last fort had 2 used rooms, with no walls. Completely open.

So, I've decided to do either a mock announcement or a dorf. Maybe a forgotten beast or something.

...On second though, since I'd have to draw it pixel by pixel to get the full ASCII effect, I'm going with the dwarf. There's no way I'm typing

Code: [Select]
page.fillRect(x,y, x,y);

"WE REQUIRE MORE MINERALS"

^ My DF play style in a nutshell. All about the gathering and hoarding of food and resources. I have no clue what to do when enemies arrive/tantrum spiral begins, and frequently lose forts as a result.

Hey hey hey! I got it done, with two days to spare. It definitely was not fun. If anyone wants to see it, then just unzip, download the two files, and run jGRASP. Then open it from there, press compile (The big green +), then press run (the running dude next to compile).

To be honest, this is taking forever to upload, so I'll post the link later.

IT'S HERE!

There is no danger too insurmountable. The office fortress never closes.

Decisions, decisions... Well, I guess I split it between the two dominant mindsets I tend to have during Fortress mode; the latter of which is more a series of moods than anything coherent.

Mindset 1:

Mindset 2:
Sadly, you can't place a spoiler inside a spoiler, so I have no way to keep this nice and tidy.

Live; the link provided to credit the photographer (above the first fox image) has more normal looking individuals.

I tend to be paranoid and warlike, with a bit of diabolical scheming and absurd humour mixed in. Most of what I do architecturally is either defensively- or efficiency-centred.

"Go forth, my minions; ye are well-armed and trained for battle. Conquer the local beasts! Then use them against the foreign beasts!"
