Dragon Attack!
« on: October 18, 2011, 10:37:50 pm »

Windmirrors is full of engravings of a legendary dragon incinerating and otherwise killing elves in the Desert of Riders where the fortress is located.  Then, during an operation to do some magma casting a dragon suddenly appears to the west!  Is this the legendary monster come to visit fire and destruction upon our fortress?

Turns out that it is not.  Ustra Anstrideve Abliusmok Lelgo is his second cousin's twice removed former roommate.  But it's a dragon in any case - so the various hatches are sealed, militia is readied, and spike traps levers manned.

The dragon charges right for the south access tunnel and goes in.  He crosses a narrow bridge while training weapons, wooden weapons, and a few spiked balls rain blows upon him causing bruises and chipping scales.  Two-thirds of the way across a serrated bronze disc gets his attention with two hits causing internal organ damage and a serious leg cut.  He opts to dodge the third attack - into a pool of magma below.  A pretty anti-climactic end I think...   :-[

Which, he being a dragon, has no effect.  And since the pool is full he swims to the end of it and climbs out.  And continues up the tunnel with some of his wounds apparently healed (cauterized by the magma?).  More traps are there - serrated glass discs glance off his armored scales as he turns right into a smaller tunnel.

And right then...
The spinning (iron great axe) strikes The Dragon in the head and the severed part sails off in an arc!   :o

Time to put the engravers and statue makers to work!  The mechanics get this one built in their quarters!   ;)  Or we'll just preserve the head and let them have that.   :D

As opposed a passive dragon from the west?

Turns out that it is not.  Ustra Anstrideve Abliusmok Lelgo is his second cousin's twice removed former roommate.  But it's a dragon in any case - so the various hatches are sealed, militia is readied, and spike traps levers manned.
Who's Ustra Anstrideve Abliusmok Lelgo?

The dragon charges right for the south access tunnel and goes in.  He crosses a narrow bridge while training weapons, wooden weapons, and a few spiked balls rain blows upon him causing bruises and chipping scales.  Two-thirds of the way across a serrated bronze disc gets his attention with two hits causing internal organ damage and a serious leg cut.  He opts to dodge the third attack - into a pool of magma below.  A pretty anti-climactic end I think...   :-[
Except that magma immune part...

Yes! Dragons are birthed in magma. Chances are that being dropped into magma is like being dropped in a hot bath.

Actually, I think its the dragons size increases how fast it heals. Since it was being bashed with little wounds, it shrugged them off easily.

And right then...

Put it on a spike and leave it outside your gates as a warning to the other dragons! A show of power. Build a statue garden of your battles, selecting only the statues that depict battles. I could only imagine 20 years down the line, some dwarf mechanic showing his son, proudly, "Yar, 'dis was a mighteh dragon, lad, but we slew'im! Took off his head clean off!"

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Mechanic's Dining Room (a small two-table part of the main Dining Hall) has the dragon skull in a stockpile outside of it.  (Was tempted to make a totem, but just having the skull is better IMO.)

Dining Hall is serving Dragon Roast with quarry leaves.  Our resident Tigerman prefers it straight up though.

And, best of all, we have *dragon soap*.  Urist approved for when you want to get that magma clean feeling and do not have a volcano readily available.
