Well conundrum
« on: October 18, 2011, 07:54:23 pm »

So...I'm playing a hot desert map, with little rainfall, so my only water source is the caverns. I've found a spot that eventually comes out on top of a pretty deep pool, so I'm making my plans to put the well there, but I also don't want my well to be an entry source for Fun. Any suggestions?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Move all your fort to the caverns.  Build an epic army.  Wall off everything.

Use a floor grate.

The only solution a TRUE dwarf would use...except maybe "Flood the cavern with magma," but that wouldn't help your problem.

It could if he flooded very selectively...

Put your barracks right next to the well or the entrance to the well?

If you can't get down to the water source (But be advised, the farther up from the water a well is, the longer it takes to pull water. a -30z level drop takes quite a bit of time), then I'd advise make a anti-building-destroyer hatch system. That way, if when something comes in, you can lock off the area until you assemble a military (OR MAGMA) to deal with it.

Find an area of the caverns where a wall meets the water, then dig into that wall channelling down, once you get to the level you want, dig a nice big resevoir, dig across until you hit the wall that touches the water. Then build a floodgate just infront of the wall, link the floodgate to a lever, build a grate behind it, dig a set of stairs to one side of the main tunnel up, channel out the wall blocking the water source (making sure to leave the floodgate open), dig a path back to civilisation, then wall off the access point. You might also like to use a lever and a hatch to secure the well shaft. Then it's a simple matter of bringing in enough water to suit your needs. If your still worried, build an S bend with a grate in one or both of the vertical tunnels, making sure to have the whole thing underneath the water line.

PROFIT!!!
