Let's Play Corporate Aurora: Boardroom War in Space! Dead.
« on: October 18, 2011, 03:43:18 pm »

What an exciting time to lives in! With the world firmly in control of the World Company, and such sillly things as Freedom or Democracy now gone, humanity -or at least the tiny percentage of it you're part of- had never had it so good.

And now, with the discovery of Jump Points, the World Company may soon become the Universe Company! Truly, those are great times to live in, if you're part of the 0,001%.

But jump-capable ships are expensive, interstellar colonization even more so. As a young C.E.O., it is your duty to inject as much capital in the World Company as possible, buying new shares until you can take control of the Board of Directors.

So, after the death of my previous Aurora game, I decided to start a new one. Aurora is a 4X game that look like a cross between Excel and GalCiv. It does however lack a good AI. To bring some challenge in the game, you won't play against the AI, but against each other.

The Rules

A)In Game Rules
I'll play with Invaders off, everything else on, including Real Stars. NPR generation will be high (around 60-80%, not sure yet)

B)Factions
You play a corporation, bent on taking control of Earth. Because I do not want factions to disappear during the game, try to make teams of 2 or 3 players. It's also a good way for newbies to learn about the game.

If you want to play on your own, be ready to be commited for a game that will (hopefully) lasts for months.

There are different types of factions, choose from the list or invent your own.

Planet Corp:Your standard corporation. You took over a planet and now try to make as much out of it as possible. Population:500 mil Industry: 500 IC Shares:5

Asteroid Corp:Your company is based on a large asteroid, with many smaller subsidiaries across the belt. Population:500 mil, Industry: 400 IC, Shares: 5, Orbital Habitat for 750 mil people, 50 modules on ships (asteroid miners/salvager/sorium harvester)

Penal Colony:Establishing penal colonies in space seemed like the best way for prison companies to make money:how could the prisoners escape? Little did they plan that the prisoners would found companies and buy out their guardians.
Population:750 mil, Industry:500 IC, no shares, weak fleet. Get prisoners transport from Earth from time to time.

Genetic Pioneer: Some corporations decided it was cheaper to modify their employees than terraform a planet.
Population: 300 mil, Industry 500 IC, Shares: 5, Your population is made of genetically engineered people adapted to their planet.

C) Earth, the WC and the Board of Directors.

The rumors about a corporate Leviathan controlling everyhing on Earth are evidently false. The World Company only control the things you're interested in: the army, the industry, the mines, the labs... Its army especially is fearsome. It operates long-range missiles from its many bunker deep underground that can nuke anything within Jupiter's orbit. Its orbital platform can shoot down any missiles approaching. Its mais mission is to protect Earth, but the Board of Directors can give it other missions.

The Board of Director can do anything on Earth. Controlling it means controlling humanity, and this is your aim. Decisions are voted by the shareholders, in addition the the PC, Non-Player Corporation control around 70 shares. Shares can be bought for 5000 wealth or sold for 2500 wealth to the market. If you get an absolute majority of shares, you win.

D)OOC Informations
I'll send you your turns by PM. The state of your corp will be edited in a google doc. This thread will be used for discussion, negociations and other public stuffs mostly. I'll also post all the public events here for all to see.

E) Missiles
Missiles are way to overpowered for my taste. In order to nerf them, 50% of their weight has to be geo sensors.

H) Communications and characters
For simplicity's sake, all communications within a solar system are assumed to be instantaneous. However, distances between systems are so great that signals take years to travel. If you send a task force inside a system without a Jump Gate, you won't be able to communicate with it. You may very well never heard of it again, without knowing why.

There is three way to keep control of the TF. The first is Jump Gate, that can send information across. The second is a picket ship. The third, and most interesting, is to have a PC leading the TF.

Each member of a team will be set as a PC inside the game. At least one member per team must stay on the homeworld to manage it, but the others are free to lead TFs. A player-led TF will take orders from him and him alone. He is also forbidden to share informations with his teammates until communication has been established with the capital. (Any breach of that rule will be punished with an asteroid crashing into your capital).

G) Sign-Up Sheet
Corporation Name:
CEO Name:
Corporation Type:
IC Breakdown (You choose the focus of your faction. A mine, factory of any kind, financial center or refinery is 1 IC. A lab is 20):
Starting Planet/Asteroid:Choice for planet are Mars, Mercury, Venus, Titan, Io, Callisto, the Moon and Ganymede. Just choose your asteroid(s) from wikipedia.
Fleet Focus: (Missiles warship, meson gunboat, basically what your shipbuilding doctrine is)

I'm interested in this!

it's my first community game, but at least I know aurora.

I'd like to take a seat in this, only one thing is not that clear. It's about the sign up sheet, in fact. We all have one share in the company, and vote on equal basis, at least a start, right?

it's one player per share, with teams forming up a corporation, or one share per team? (I'd prefer the latter, I fear I could have some off time)

Well, each team is a corporation. The corporation can own shares in the World Company, that control Earth. Your faction is based on another planet.

Oh. Hmm....the shares thing kinda complicates my plans for the People's Democratic Republic of Titan. Might have to rethink that.

I would like to play but I have never played before.

Corporation Name: Gargantuan
CEO Name: Titus Octavian Ceaserion
Corporation Type: We used to be strictly into mining but with the advent of new technologies we have begun our earnest into producing things.
IC Breakdown
Starting Planet/Asteroid: We inhabit the wonderful planet of Venus
Fleet Focus: We build massive cruisers with heavy plating
History: Founded early after humans left the earths atmosphere the Gargantuan corporation always had its eyes set on Venus. While all the other corporations floundered towards Mars Gargantuan started construction on a giant global sail to cool down Venus. After that was completed it started to plunder mercilessly from the surface of the quickly cooling Venus taking huge amounts of raw material and sending it back to the endless hunger of the World Company.

Am I doing this right?

I'd suggest you team up with a more experianced player if you never played Aurora before. It is a really complex game.

Well... I'd like to join this, but I've never played the game before. And if its that complex, I should probably get some experience with it first. I will of course ,watch this like a hawk.

Does this game require a stable internet connection?

Because I can check the forums but I am constantly switching between computers. Is that a problem?

No, not at all. I'll be playing the game anyway, you'll only send me orders by PM and discuss with other players.

I might be inclined to join in with this, I have played the game a little to the point of understanding most of the basics and some of the more advanced stuff.

Why so?
Well it seems a bit weird for genetic-engineered communists to be trying to corner the stock market. I think I can make it work, maybe just make them less strident and make it more of a cooperative/collective than a hardcore communist faction.

Okay, here goes:
Corporation Name: Titan Collective
CEO: Speaker Jose Villareal
Corporation Type: Genetic Pioneer
IC Breakdown: 130 mines, 130 construction factories, 10 research labs (on Titan), 30 fuel refineries, 10 financial centers.
Starting Planet: Titan
Fleet Focus: Smaller, laser-armed craft (I don't want to commit to fighters until I see what my Vendarite reserves look like)
History: In the early 21st century, billions of people on Earth cashed in on the Trans-Newtonian Revolution. Billions of people in the First World, that is. The rich expanded onto new worlds, remade them in their image, and extracted their resources to become even richer. Meanwhile, the areas of the world that had traditionally been neglected continued to decline. Billions across South America, Africa and Southeast Asia lived in abject poverty, forgotten in the race to the stars.

Until one man, Juan Carlos Villareal, the brilliant Argentinian geneticist, discovered a way to splice the genetic mechanisms of Methylococcus capsulatus into the human genome. The resulting changes to metabolic pathways was drastic, but survivable. The M. capsulatus-modified humans (which came to be known as "Emcaps") were initially used in waste reclamation projects where the concentrations of methane were too toxic for human workers, but Villareal soon realized that combined with other genetic treatments, Emcaps could find a comfortable home on the methane-shrouded moon Titan. Selling all the copyrights to all the other genetic modifications he had created over the years, except for the M. capsulatus treatment, he spent these funds setting up a private genetic conversion centre, buying a few outdated colony transports, and some mining and factory equipment, and made a pitch on global TV: Any humans who wished to leave Earth but did not want to work under the yoke of corporate servitude were invited to undergo the Emcap conversion, be transported to Titan, and join a new utopian collective society there.

This was a drastic decision. Undergoing the conversion meant that Earth was no longer a hospitable world--its gravity too much for honeycombed bones, it's temperature fiery hot even in the polar regions, it's air poisonous. It was a one-way ticket to a new life. And yet, hundreds of millions of desperate souls from across these poorest of areas took Villareal's offer, became biological strangers to their native planet, and made their home among Titan's icy shroud. When Villareal passed away in an industrial accident five years ago the collective voted his son Jose, who took the Emcap treatment at the tender age of nine, as their new Speaker.

Other: Please make the theme South America, the commander names Spanish, with secondary commanders thus:
Kenyan 15%
Portuguese (Brazilian) 15%
Indonesian 5%

Nice! As per my post on the old thread, I'd possibly like to world in conjunction with RedKing if possible.

EDIT: Adding post:

Hey Red, saw you on the Kingdoms thread, nice to see you here.

I LOVE your idea of methane-breathers, actually. I'm also trying to go for a not-exactly-human race, preferably on Venus, but Sheb said he doesn't really want non-humans in Sol. :\ I think it'd be an awesome counter-measure to balance the game since there are some moons/planets Humans can't colonize, and it'd be awesome for US not to be able to colonize Earth. On my side, I wanted cold-resistant genetically-altered humans by the name of the Arkhan'a Imperium, a sort of Roman-esque imperial structure with their people based on the Nords, a start-up throwback to the 'Kingdoms of old' led by a line said to be the blood of walking gods. Pretty much, they'll be Socialist isolationists out in the mid-end of the solar-system on a very cold world, genetically-altered to accept cold and shun the heat, making them incapable of living on a world like Earth. By the way, can you make a civ breathe something OTHER than oxygen and methane?

As Sheb suggested to me via PM, we could be 'inserted' later-on into a different system.

Actually... How about me and you team up, my guys take the cold oxygen and you take the cold methane? That'll still leave the warm worlds for Humans to eventually colonize, BUT, it'll give us our own little niche in the universe we can use to pinch human explorers and establish our own front. ;)
