With minesweeper at least, it can be a complete jerk at times and give you scenarios where you must guess at the solution (and I frequently lose when I guess). I suppose mining adamantine isn't so different than that, but I've heard of techniques for revealing if the vein is safe to go down another level.
It's not foolproof, and needs a little more than the usual "what's next to it?" pattern-recognition to work it out, but when you've got a medium-sized[1] blank space left in the middle of nowhere, you can often use the number of mines left to 'role-play various possible patterns within it.
What usually gets me is misclicks, when I'm nearly there. But if I'm going that fast I'm not usually bothered about the couple of minutes or so I've spent mostly denuding the largest grid, initially in quickfire-mode, and then slowing as more actual working out needs to be applied.
[1] There's always the possibility of two mines to go and the following setup:

#2321

...and when you've got a line of definitive mines (and definite gaps you can't 'get through') dividing the screen into the half you know and a half untouched (except for those a few of your initial probes before you opened up the gap), on the more advanced skill-level I still count that as 'starting'
