Glass as trap component
« on: October 17, 2011, 10:43:20 pm »

How good is glass versus metal as trap components ? Steel is too precious for me to wast on traps altough i'm sure it's better. How is glass VS the other metals ?

It's mass produced (or should be, we all have magma, right?) and that makes it valuable.  Quantity is a quality all its own.  10x serrated glass disks will win out against 1 serrated steel disk when steel is rare.

I prefer spiked balls or disks, as they hit 3 times each strike.

Glass is pretty damn good this version, and you can further magnify it by making a dodge-em hallway pit-trap.

Iron is better and easier to produce. Plus it trains weaponsmith, an infinitely better skill then 'glasshole'.

If iron serrated disks aren't available use silver warhammers in weapon traps.

I have a great love of the discs. 10 discs = 30 hits. I have had giants walk onto 10-disc traps and i have found pieces of them in the deepest caverns the explosion is that violent.

Edged glass trap weapons in DF will easily cut through flesh and cloth, but will have a hard time against bone or any metal armor. Goblins typically have unarmored legs (bug?) so glass serrated disc traps will make them shorter.

Goblins are armored on their legs.  It's just that it's only a loincloth.  You can mod them to wear greaves/boots if you so desire, but a vanilla goblin is a rather feral creature, it seems to me.  Give them a breastplate and they gladly rush to battle.

Glass is all in how you use it.  lone spiked glass ball?  not really effective except as a dodge-me.  10x Discs?  the dwarven Cuisinart is always decently effective.

weapon traps armed with glass are cheap and quick to assemble, leaving the good stuff for actual military applications, which will be especially important on a map with sand but poor minerals.

If I'm going to use traps but I don't have sand, then I use silver/copper spiked balls. If I do have sand, then I make glass corkscrews. It only hits once and the glass isn't particularly strong, but the huge penetration and small-medium contact area makes it function like a huge mining pick, the dwarfiest and mightiest of all weapons.

Glass is less sturdy than metal but sharper: At least as good at cutting up exposed flesh, less so at cutting through bone or armour.

For pointy things (spikes, balls) it's mostly a cheap and good-enough substitute... they're heavy and have a smaller contact area than spears so even glass will do against goblin-level armour.
For slashing components, it serves a different purpose and is arguably preferable to metal: Glass disks still create a glorious mess, but fewer instant kills than their metal equivalents equal less stuck traps.

In general, I use glass for spiked balls. Glass is still dense enough that a giant glass ball will hurt through armor, and it's sharp enough that unarmored targets get spiked fairly thoroughly. It's also nice to have glassworkers gaining skill for no resource investment but magma and bags, especially while my metalworkers are still training on nonweapon metals.

The spiked balls penetration is negligable. They are -not- better than upright spikes/spears.

I use glass spiked balls in conjunction with a dodge'm trap. I use a checkerboard layout and first half is upright glass spikes linked to a lever with the second half being glass spike ball traps. I like spike balls for their smashing ability. Anything that doesn't dodge now has numerous fractures and is easily mopped up. Discs are really good too...I'm just a fan of breaking things rather than slicing. Personal preference really.

If you censor the word "glass", this sounds so inappropriate  :P

Actually thanks to this thread I might switch to glass spiked balls, seeing as less goblin bits = less hauling.
