Getting dwarves to go off break.
« on: October 17, 2011, 04:06:02 pm »

I had literally 2/3 of my fortress go on break at the same time.  How do I get them to stop being lazy fucks and do their jobs?

This includes all my masons and the entire medical team.

They all have breaks. no escaping that. Booze shortens breaks. Without booze, or good booze, they go on longer and longer breaks until they effectively decide they cannot be arsed any more.

They have a whole stockpile full of barrels of varied, high quality booze.  /sigh

Didn't help.

This fort has poor minerals anyways.   No iron, no silver, only one candy vein.  No coal or limestone to use goblinite, too bad the goblins are extinct anyways.

And the dwarves are still doing nothing, ofc.  So, I shal now flood the fort with !!Magma!! and watch the !!FUN!!.

Nothing in that article mentions going on break more often without alcohol, it just says they lose speed which makes them perform all operations slower.

Having dwarves go without alcohol does destroy any productivity you have but doesn't influence breaks as far as I know. Never a good idea to run out of booze.

A small cave-in into the meeting area can make dwarves reconsider their current activity, being idle in this case.

You can't really prevent breaks. Best thing to do is to use them to make sure the breaking dwarves are happy by having a masterwork statue garden with shiny engravings or something for them to loiter in.

Then again, that can provoke parties. Truly a vicious cycle.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Use meeting room zones. Then place statues in the meeting room.

Party solved.
