Subversion is dead, mostly.
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:50:43 am »

The makers of Darwinia had been working on a heist game for the last 5 or 6 years and teasing us that it was getting ever nearer to launch only now to have crushed our spirits. It seems they lost their vision and only now realized that the core game dynamic was and would never be fun.

They've been quiet on this subject for so long that this isn't a massive surprise.

Let's just hope this new game of their is decent.

Subversion has not been cancelled, but I would certainly forget about it for now. We will be going back to that project eventually, but the first thing I plan to do is gut the thing from top to bottom of all the tech fluff that we forced in over the years.

Call it an extended delay, we'll still be getting our filthy gamer mitts on it in the future.

Can't wait to see what they're working on now, these guys have yet to fail to impress me.

Sounds reasonable to me: they feel the core gameplay just isn't there and it needs rethinking. Good to hear they're reusing some of the tech and code for the next project though, and since it's submitted to the IGF we should get to hear more soon.

Aw, that is a shame.  Hopefully they come back to it at some point and figure out the fun factor.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Indeed sad news, i was really looking forward to Subversion, however, i trust that their new game would be as innovative and as fun.

I hope it has something to do with that Voxel engine a la minecraft with proper physics tech demo he showed not so lately.

It's sad, but can anyone honestly say they didn't see it coming?  Subversion always had that vaporware stench to it.

They made some great tech.  I can understand that they didn't really have a core game that they were building around and that without it, you need to focus elsewhere.

I hope we see some of that tech show up in future games.

There's all kinds of things you can do with a proc-gen city.  Street racing, anyone?

I must say, it's quite disappointing to see a game that surely thousands of people looked forward to get put on the chopping block like this, but I deeply respect this developer for realizing the mistake, instead of pushing it through and ending up with a crappy over-hyped game.
