33a- dogs will not stay chained (dwarves too)
« on: November 02, 2007, 01:50:00 am »

I've gotten to the point where kobolds are a real nuisance, and decided to post war dogs at my entrances.  This worked until the first time they found kobolds, at which point they slipped the leash, and future attempts by my dwarves to chain them had no effect.  The dwarf brings the war dog to the leash, and suddenly the dog just runs off.

Of course the instant I post this, it starts working again.  I guess it's possible that they were interrupting their chain animal jobs to do something else at the very last minute.

This is not to say that the dogs aren't still escaping.  I think the chain animal job works, but the dog will leave if he/she wants to badly enough.

Edit: I just had a miner jailed for failing to fulfill an impossible demand (fine pewter items in a fort before I discovered any Tin) and he leaves his rope to go try and eat.

I have the same problem trying to chain dogs. They just run off.

I think they run off when they spot their tamer. Someone has mentioned this in an other thread.
Perhaps Toady can look into this. Sounds like an annoying thing.

I chained two horses at the entrance to spot the annoying kobolds. one of them worked fine, the other one had to be re-chained like ten times before it stuck. someone would drag it over, chain it, start walking away, and then it would get loose and they'd turn around and drag it back.

I'm getting the occasional "Chain Animal" job, but it was happening with the cows I have tied up with rope before I ever chained up the dogs.

This happens with babies too!  Amusing.

Is rope quality a factor?  Do better quality chains hold things more effectively?  (Is this a feature?)

I used ropes and they couldn't keep my war dogs chained.  So I tried copper chains and they didn't keep the dogs held either.  I was in the process of making some iron chains and ran out of iron bars.  This definitely seems like a problem.  Surely a copper chain should be able to hold a dog.

With grown dwarves that won't stay, try drafting them. I had an instance with a dwarf that wouldn't stay jailed and kept leaving to attend a meeting with the guard bringing him right back over and over. I drafted him to break his current job, and then he stayed just fine. (Of course this didn't make him any happier)
