COBALTITE has canquered the world

COBALTITE
Every map, it dominates the metamorphic layers, usually the dominant vein type.
Which does not make sense, as cobaltite is actually fairly rare, compared to other minerals.

Modding in a reductive smelting process + coke to yield 10% iron makes it somewhat useful without being a *blatant cheat, but still, I'd rather it be historically and geologically accurate.

What do you do with your excessive stores of shiny blue cobaltite?
Without modding, I usually make doors, hatches, and constructions from it.

*not a blatant cheat because it does contain 10% iron, smelting cobaltite yields oxides of both, which can be reduced using carbon, but IRL smelting cobaltite also produces toxic arsenic gas

I find Cobaltite quite a nice metal.
Even if there are more supperior metals, this one I am glad to encounter in DF.
It has a nice color without being too much of an eyesore.

And what I do with it?
I use it for whatever, if there's enough of it.
If it's like in your world, ALL my metal products are cobaltite.

If it's rare..
First I mod dwarves to be able to make katanas.
Then I make my blacksmiths make as many Cobalt katanas as possible.
My military is then exclusively using these weapons.
If I lose my fort because of y choise in metal and weaponry, tough luck.. I want my cobalt katanas!

Haven't seen any and I'm swimming in marble, quartzite and schist. (I have the opposite problem--magnetite everywhere and not a stone of lignite or bituminous coal.)

Cobaltite is by far the heaviest non-economic stone.  Using that for ammunition makes stone-fall traps and catapults marginally more useful.  I learned to hate it because mechanisms are my main trade good, and cobaltite mechanisms are really heavy, cutting into my trade.  Now I turn cobaltite off in the stones menu.

Except that you can't make swords or axes with cobaltite stone...

I might have to mod that in for my fortresses sometime. Colbalt, uranium, and some other metals from ores that already exist. I wonder if Toady will ever put this in the game. It would be fun to have barrels of Mercery rolling out of your smelters. Although I have no idea what you would use this for.

Have it deteriorate (rot) and instead of miasma release a syndrome-inducing cloud of radioactive evil?

You're lucky I've already been through BitF, or I'd be so pissed about this distraction right now...

Genesis Mod already lets you smelt cobaltite.

By compressive yield/fracture:
Copper -> Cobalt -> Spellwood -> Black Bronze -> Bismuth Bronze -> Bronze -> Iron -> Sun Gold -> Steel -> Black Steel -> Red Steel -> Adamantine

By weight/density:
Adamantine ->Iron -> Spellwood -> Sun Gold -> Steel -> Black Steel -> Red Steel -> Bismuth Bronze -> Bronze -> Cobalt -> Copper -> Black Bronze

By edge:
Spellwood -> Copper -> Cobalt -> Iron -> Bismuth bronze -> Black bronze -> Bronze -> Sun gold -> Steel -> Black steel -> Red steel -> Adamantine

S'a good hammer material. FEAR THE BLUE HAMMERS
