How does the embark thing work. I set my dwarfs before embark then I could edit their skills no problem but I can't figure out how to add items or anything. If I hit refresh on the items section it just stays empty. Is that part working yet?

isitanos,
I haven't seen the crashing problem you describe. It definitely spams though, the change I am making should prevent both issues.

shortbus,
No the items isn't working yet, that is a todo for later when I get back to working on items again. I should hide that section to prevent confusion until it works.

Go down to the very bottom z level, and mark the whole thing for mining out, then remove it, and try digger again. I want to do it automatically one of these days.

I just updated a new version with isitanos' bug fix. Give it a try and let me know if it works.

I also added a friendly message to digger informing people of the mining out whole bottom level trick, until I write a way to automatically allocate it for people.

I did forget to hide the items section of Embark Editor... oh well...

I've used the digger successfully and I didn't dig out the entire bottom of the map. I only had several exploratory shafts down there, and a long hallway spanning the Y-axis of the bottom, and that was enough. I think it just has to be one square designated per map-size tile, right? So on a 1x4 map like mine (thanks nanofortress!) a straight hallway all the way up worked.

i had major problems with digger, even with the new version.
the problem was, that my miners didnt digg out the designated squares.
all looked right, but the miners where on no job with tons of designated squares.
manualy re-dig one of the designated squares was made my miners dig out the squares like 10 tiles to all directions away from the manually designated square.

but i was able to try-and-error a way to use it, its just 2 easy rules :

1. do never ever use "unchanged" tiles in your patterns. use only "walls".
2. before pressing the "play" button of digger, designate the whole field to be digged out. if you use no "unchanged" squares in your pattern, this shuld be no problem.

this leads to 2 suggestions:
1.can you make the default for new patterns all black? its much much work to paint it all black
2. can you allow us to set what shuld be painted with the right mouse button?
this wuld save lots of klicks.

I have run into that too, usually it takes just marking a single tile for digging to reset.

The "Unchanged" tile prevents digger from setting it to anything, think of it as a transparency mask.

I believe when a tile is marked for digging, it queues up a job somewhere, and because digger goes the back way and just marks the tiles (which is extremely fast) it doesn't get the job queued up.

I have been thinking about it the last few days, and I will probably go through and change digger to use keyboard events to designate. It will be slower, but it wont run into these types of problems. It also will cause DF to allocate the map as needed, so you wont have to mark the whole thing anymore. I have digger already using your current in-game font for display instead of color coding. I also want to add the ability to draw squares, and flood-fill.

but... it works like a charm. at last as long as one "pre-diggs" the tiles.
its just a single return-strike, so maby a simple readme wuld fix this.

for the unchanged: its ok to have the option for unchanged for some spezial patterns.  as default i think walls wuld be  better.

hmm... Is there anybody else that want's their preferences heard before I make any changes to it?

As it stands, I will probably implement motorbitch's idea if nobody else speaks up.

Version Bump. My turn around time is getting better. Hopefully Toady won't release the screen drawing fix this weekend while I am away. Or next weekend while I am also away (PAX!).

I made those changes to digger, so It default fills "Wall". I have fixed some memory leaks, did some speed improvements, etc. I also have moved the class data to Global.ini so it is easier to maintain. Older versions of DF may not work, but 39a should still work for those of you with the screen drawing problems.

I couldn't edit my skills with the embark tool.  Everything is just greyed out.  I understand that you disabled the item changing ability.  Did this spill over into the skill editor as well?  I got the impression that the skill editor worked in older versions.

Hmm, thats strange. It works fine on my end.

The only way that I could think that would happen is if you weren't far enough into embarking before you opened the editor and it isn't refreshing correctly. Try opening it when you are viewing the dwarf skill list.
