My personal favorite was a masterful picture of some monster from the deep looking menacing.
I found it under the mayor's son's bed.

My personal favorite the engraving in the Mayor's bedroom of the previous mayor getting torn apart by some goblins.   I like to think that he ordered the hit.  8)

Apperently a Hydra had its way with most of the planet in world gen, because the vast majority of the ingravings in my currant fort are of ponies embracing or being struck down by this gold-scaled serpentine abomination. No, realy, about half are ponys prostrating themselves before this thing and the other half are of them being eaten! :o

It seems this Hydra is prayed to not out of reverance, but out of fear, A la
" O Great Hydrathulu, please, please stay away from us a little longer, or perhapes go to sleep for a few decades.I am sure we can gather up a few more cattle for your next coming by then. Amen."

My most recently-abandoned fort had engravings of nonsensical shapes, the dwarves in the fort being elevated to a station or making an artifact, or an elf hero. This elf hero had killed many crocodiles in a swamp about 50 years before my fort was started. This elf didn't do anything else except for go to this swamp, tame the crocs, and survive. But fully half of the engravings were of this one elf hero. The same boring scene replayed over and over and over...

Ah, just got a new one. This one's of an artifact called "Shockplans the Grizzly Simplicities" and is called "The Bewitched Complexity."

I see it as saying that to the dwarf who made it, it was amazingly simple to understand, but to the engraver, it was so complex that it seemed as though it were cursed into being non-understandable. If I'm making any sense, it's kinda lateish.

Oh, this is just based off name, but I really like The Shriveled Phlegms. Has a nice ring to it.

I keep getting So and so the Minotaur, X the Lion, Y the Cougar, and Z the Shadow whats-it all laboring, which refers to them settling into the area.

While building my military memorial hall, containing all named weapons in glass cases, my engravers saw it necessary to engrave nothing but the constant deaths of my soldiers. Every migrant wave I had to draw atleast 3 people to replace losses, and they felt the need to engrave that all over the damn hall.

a picture of the countess and mussels. the countess looked terrified. it was in the gathering hall where all the dwarves went to take their breaks and the countess would take visiting diplomats to conduct meetings.

My mayor is hated by my main engraver.
The mayor's bedroom has an engraving of the death of every dwarf who has died in the fort.
They're all screaming.

I've got nothing too offensive, apart from various mysterious engravings of a 'one-eyed woman'.

Oh, and all the engravings of the Goddess of Death, either screaming, rotting, embracing dwarves, or terrifying dwarves, all throughout the dorm level.  And the one engraving, in the Trade Depot, of the previous elven merchants being dismembered or something violent...

My favourite? One of my dwarves embracing floating eyeballs. I dumped him in with a bunch of them. Didn't like them much then did he?  :P

My guess is that the engraver blames the mayor for all those deaths?

In my world that has had two forts so far, the dwarfs seem to pass around what I think is a brief story about an elf named Feccici getting struck down by Bronze Colossus named Feccaci. I imagine it goes something like this:

Feccici asked Feccaci to stop cutting trees
Feccaci killed Feccici with a rather audible sneeze
(Or some variation of this)

This attitude probably explains the unexpected war between my dwarf civ and the nearby elf civ.
