KatamariRL
« on: October 16, 2011, 02:18:38 am »

I can't believe nobody's made this before.  As you can see, it's very early in creation...but this is the 7DRL I started last night.

The dark yellow area shows the ground you will cover in the next ten moves.  Instead of directly controlling your katamari's motion, you control how fast it's rolling; go too fast, and it'll take you several moves to slow down or turn!

Content generation is hard.  Yes, your katamari does grow.  The world also scales up in powers of 4 (but that's not implemented yet).

I find this glorious.  Please complete this and leave me in dwarven katamari bliss~

Also, may want to look out for copyright.  I'm not sure how it applies at all, but names can be claimed and things can get messy.

Haha!  That's really tempting actually.

And this is one case where I'm really not bothered by copyright.  I worry about it with my Darklands project because, well, it's a faithful remake and the aim is for a layman to really not know the difference.  Roguelikes are a different critter:  DoomRL, CastlevaniaRL, MegamanRL, the new XComRL, all that stuff...nobody seems to care in the slightest, and that's just fine with me.

This looks interesting. Posting to watch. :)

As for copyright, this is probably technically illegal, but no one really has any reason to do anything about it. As long as you're not selling this thing for profit, it's basically free advertising for the real Katamari.

Laptop died, and took all my code with it.

I am disappoint.

Fortunately it's a PITA to develop on a laptop so that's the only creative work I lost, but still, game over (unless something miraculous happens).

Not convinced it was going to work out, primarily because of the relatively short viewing distance.  I was going to scale all the ascii characters down to half size to compensate, make the screen a lot bigger, make the katamari like 20 characters wide at the biggest point on any given scale...but at that point, you are not working with ASCII characters.  You are working with NES-era sprite fragments.

It would be tempting to make a proper 3D katamari knockoff that was, if not fully open-source, then at least highly user customizable with the ability to add new objects and levels.  I was so disappointed by The Wonderful End of the World because, while they were a mediocre-but-passable PC clone, they didn't leverage the PC's biggest strength: modding.

Frankly Sowelu I think your right. A ASCII Katamari game suffers from many issues such as draw distance, Vital in a Katamari game, and object size and ultimately couldn't work as a standard Katamari game (to the point where when I saw this project. I thought it was going to be something else. Like a weird RPG or something where your collection is like EXP. Sans why I never commented).

At least I don't consider the project a loss, though.

Quote from: Thomas Edison
I have not failed 10,000 times. I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.

What I DID prove to myself is that the movement mechanics were kind of fun.  I always wanted to try it for horseback riding in a roguelike.  It'll be even better if you're controlling someone who's only one tile wide, instead of a giant sphere that scrapes large objects all over the place...

Also Neonivek, I know in one Angband (might have even been Steamband), or maybe ToME or something, there's a robot class whose level is determined entirely by their currently equipped gear.  So it's kinda that.

Heck as long as you didn't fail because you were incompetent OR because you couldn't strive up the effort to finish I consider it a success.

I wish my projects reached natural ends.
