Should I wait for the next version..?
« on: October 15, 2011, 05:21:02 am »

Hello fellow DF-ers!

I've been planning in my head a mega fort with all dwarf needs controlled by a massive water clock. The whole fort will be sunk beneath the surface of a lake... It will take me ages.

I was wondering should I start building it now, or should I wait for the release of the next version? I'd hate to get half-way in and then have the new version released. Or will the old saves be compatible with the new version?
I've only joined with the current version, so I don't know how a change-over works...

Thanks for the help! :)

Well, next version may arrive in next month, maybe in two months, maybe three. And it will be buggy beyond imagination. So I suggest to go with current version or wait three to six months to get new version without additional gamebreaking bugs.

But those gamebreaking bugs might be HILARIOUS.
Note on 'might'.

Or they might be annoying, like how arsenal dwarf was, although I figure that was less of a bug and more of a problem with how the job functioned.

Then in the current version I shall build! Water fort of procrastination, here I come!

On a side note, can a screw pump pump water from a flooded room into a below-the-surface tile of water, say, the bottom of a lake? Or does the receiving tile have to be free of water?

Wiki water pressure, or check my sig for the Compendium of Knowledge and find the thread for water dynamics.  It's a complicated thing and someone has already explained it, so I'll just let you find their explanation.

Then you're doing it wrong.  Knowledge generates fun, not the other way around.

The Fun will arrive when I get bored and decide to turn my water fort into a magma fort :P.

I might mention that you do not have to install any new version. Since you can run multiple versions, though, there's no reason not to, (low drive space?) So if the save IS incompatible or the new version adds "quirks" that are not fun, run this current version for this fort. Simple.

I look forward to seeing this.
