How many miners do you use?
« on: October 14, 2011, 08:16:20 pm »

In your average fort, how many miners do you use? I typically only use four, but recent experiences with using eight have been pretty great. Of your miners, how many of them are lava pipe breakers/throwaway migrants and how many of them are legendary or better?

On average? However many come with skill, which usually adds up to 6 before things go to shit. Recently, I put together a team of 20 to dig a giant hole to build a base in to flood. That's probably the only time I will ever have that many miners at once.

I bring two on embark, and usually by the 3rd year in 2 more have come. Then we all die.

So... 4?

I usually have two full-time miners, then later on have a few other miners who are trained to legendary mining so they can become ☼Pick☼ wielding soldiers.

Legendary Miner is probably the easiest Legendary skill to get in the game, to the extent that you'll always have guys that get it by accident just through normal play.

So yeah, embark with 2, end up with however many show up to the party later.

by endgame I usually have 7-8 miners.

I have to keep them from disrupting each others' dig patterns with burrows, though :(

Usually I use two, but every once in a while I'll embark with all seven. They can survive with nothing but their picks until the first migrant wave, then I can plant food. Eventually I just get an anvil from the caravans, and make a carpenter and then a training axe from the wagon.

i play with a skill rates mod, i toned down experience gains drastically for most skills and set some of them as peasant skills, in which dwarves dont gain experience at all. mining is a peasant skill, so usually, every hauler is also either a miner or a woodcutter depending on my current necessities

In a hypothetical fort of 80 dwarves, about 55 of them are miners for me. Four are assigned to creating food and booze, one keeps the forges running, and the other 30 are engravers.
I did make a fort of 200 dwarves once, with 193 being miners and the remaining 7 doing necessary tasks for sustaining life. After getting all 193 to Legendary+5 (and flattening the map down about 5 z-levels), I armored them all in steel and sent them at the circus.

We were hoping for a constant fort at some point, having players in different time zones so that the fort never actually stopped running.  Come back overnight and find a giant penis has been constructed.  Glory to the penis gods.

I embark with 6 miners who all dig out the starting fort as fast as possible... as soon the respective workshop areas are ready, one becomes a farmer, one a metalworker, one the administrator, and so on. So I usually got only one or two in a young fort and later on make some migrants miners if needed. Since I like to build above ground and rarely dig out more than the necessary rooms underground, that's enough. One legendary miner can provide enough stones to keep 100 unskilled masons supplied with building material. Just in case, I like to keep another few at legendary mining skill, but not active. They're only activated when something needs to be dug out in a hurry and can do other jobs in the meantime.

Call me undwarfy for building above ground, if you like, but I see nothing wrong with a 2000 tile magma reservoir and massive walls circling the whole map ;)

Exactly 1.  This is ultimately moot because my legendary miner can harvest ore faster than my smelters can process it, and my above ground forts don't require much mined out space.  On the other side of that, unskilled miners would hurt my forts.  I dig for building material, so I like all the stone intact to build up walls.  I'm not digging out living spaces, I'm usually locking doors once an area is mined.

I don't EVER use cheap labor for mining. I always only use the best of the best, and have the best tools, for the best job of all. We pierce the vein of Armok, then we run. We bring the green boys comin', then we send 'em runnin'! HOORAH!

Short answer: Embark with 2, hire 2 or 3 skilled migrants.

This sounds like elf treachery and orc mischief to me.

Same as most people:
Two starting ones, and whatever amount happens to come in the migrant waves.

If i have a dwarf that has a decent mining level but no pick, and i really want to speed up a digging operation, i might be bothered to smith one for them.
