Heh, ive few enough dwarves now that I  can just give them the rooms of the dead officials.  I'd never bothered to give anyone but the 'nobility' sleeping arrangements, as they were all quite green, and living spaces are soooooo tedious to make.   I was focusing on finishing the complex water system.

Loyalty cascades are an amazing thing...  Protip: it's only safe to kill BERZERK dwarves!  Melancholy dwarves will cause a cascade.  Also attacking animals will trigger one.

Suggestion: Get your migrants into a small base, and put them in a room with a cat.  Order them to kill the cat, and then move them in to the fortress proper.  Glorious rebel state...

Well, at least it wasn't a bug.
It is a feature   :P

Somebody needs to ‼Science‼ this, specifically how large of a group you can get to 'rebel' while still being allied to eachother (is it just one squad, or could you have multiple squads attack the same target).

It doesn't count as a "real" civ, but for all intents they're another civ.  They classify as "an enemy of the state" making them a sort of sub-civ of the dwarves.  As I've heard it, one traitor will not attack another, so you can effectively split your fort in half, or flip it entirely.

...Really? Last I heard, they enter a dwarven free-for-all and start killing anything that moves, another traitor or not.

If it happens like this, can you then have two forts of dwarfs next to each-other, firing at each-other with seige engines?

My fortress had the same issue from a rogue crossbow bolt. It ended up with one dwarven child and a handful of war animals defending him with 50 or so murderous ghosts on the loose. When the migrants came they slaughtered the survivor child who spent nearly a year subsiting on the stores amid a silent, haunted fort whom were butchered by the war bears and lions wandering around who belonged the to outlawed milita commander. Very sad. Very epic. Actually theres a thread i made about it somewhere in here..

Obviously your military decided after killing the innocent merchants, that they didn't want to be ordered around by an Elite Conservative leader. They turned Liberal and decided to fight back against all evil Conservatives, the civilization they formed is the....Liberal Dwarf Squad.

Remember at the beginning of a game, you can give your fort and your group a name?

In a loyalty cascade, some of your dwarves are loyal to the civ and enemies of the group, while the others are enemies of the civ and loyal to the group. Loyalty cascades are possible because dwarves belong to a civ and a group.

In adventure mode, if you kill people in a human town, the civ and all groups will become enemies. However, if you start a new game as an elf whose elven civ is at war with humans, you will start in a human village (and belong to that group), making a loyalty cascade possible when people attack you.

Hm, kind of interesting to think of it as a civil war between conflicting groups. Possibley one group had enough with the crazy fiends that would kill merchants, and fought back?

I forget, if more than one dwarf survives against the rest of the fort long enough, will they attack each-other?
The way I understand it is:
1. Dwarf A kills a merchant. A is a loyal member of the fortress but an enemy of the civilization.
2. Dwarves B, C, and D attack and kill A. They are still loyal members of the civilization, since they only killed a traitor, bu are enemies of the fortress because A was still a loyal fortress member.
3. Dwarves E through O attack dwarves B through C, along with F's three wardogs and L's kitten. All of them who attacked dwarves B-D become enemies of the civilization but stay loyal members of the fortress.
4. By this point, enemies will be killing enemies and war animals/untainted dwarves will be choosing a side to join the melee on. The same basic idea is retained, though.
5. In the end, only a few dwarves, probably militia dwarves on whichever side got more, will remain. They will still be either enemies of your fortress or of your civ, and so will attack migrants and possibly merchants.
