My military is happily purging the population!
« on: October 14, 2011, 06:08:32 pm »

Well,on the bright side, this is great training.
The downside is that I need to dig one heck of a grave cavern.

So I'm trying to figure out what happened... Or rather, IS happening, as I'm letting it play out in the background as I type this.  I can't seem to stop it, so... *shrug*

The story is that a caravan from the mountainhome came along... And so did a goblin siege.  Well, I'm still trying to learn how to train a dang military, so I had to just hole up, and try to build some smashers.

In the meantime, the caravan went mad.  I figured I oughta jump on that quick, so I immediately targetted a couple merchants and yaks with my squads in training.  The do the deed...  And then a few moments later I start seeing deaths on my alerts.  Well, this is a crowded citadel of 100, so it was hard to determine just what happened.  I figured it was a fluke.  I let the game continue.  Then I see more deaths.  I have no idea where theyre coming from... Merchants?  But I don't see them..

Eventually I identify that it appears the military is killing random people with their training weapons and bone bolts.  I set the squad orders to 'move' to a spot, see if I can interrupt whatever theyre doing....  They are not listed as insane.  In fact, they've been quite happy, all this time.

I'm now down to 30 dwarfs, apparently  all going highlander on each other, and I can't get anyone to do anything.  But *NO ONE* is insane, or technically out of my control.  I cant figure out what happened.

This was my most successful fortress yet.  I had a corral of horses.  Everyone was happy.  My military was starting to get proper training.  I was building my first waterfall & pump system.  I'm irritated.
Losing is fun if you can affect the outcome based on knowledge from the loss... But this was just random.

Alright, enough venting... But really, what the hell happened?  Ideas?

It's called a loyalty cascade. When a dwarf attacks a member of his civilization, like the merchants, he becomes a traitor - even if it was on your order. Your military attacks the traitor, but since he was part of the civ, they become traitors... And they start killing everybody.

Oh for goodness sakes.  Couldn't there at least be a status alert?
Well, at least it wasn't a bug.

Loyalty Cascade a dwarf kills a member of your civ(not through the legal system or self defense) and becomesan enemy of your civ so people atttack them when they attack them they become enemies and so-on. Are you sure ALL of the caravan went VIOLENT INSANE, killing the meloncholy is the same as killing a normal dwarf or tame animal.

Look on the bright side, if you lose enough dwarves you can convert this into a hermit challenge. ;)

The merchants belonged to your home civilization, on attacking them some of your dwarves have arbitrarily decided that they're members of an exciting new civilization and have changed their status accordingly. In a bout of revolution and counter-revolution, the dwarves who are members of the old civilization and the ones who are members of the new crowd have gone to war with each other.

If you look closely at the wall of text on the status page, you'll notice that Urist McFightThePower is now a member of the Herped Derps, while Urist McStatusQuo who is busily stabbing his former comrade in the face continues to be a loyal member of the Circle of Merp. You can wait until the revolution boils over, I guess, but if the young radicals win they'll probably kill any migrants who arrive.

I forget, if more than one dwarf survives against the rest of the fort long enough, will they attack each-other?

It all depends on who is a member of which civilization; the initial fighting caused a group of the dwarves to spontaneously generate a new civilization.

Well, I'm interested in seeing what happens... But the killings slowed down, and oddly, there's some tight corridors that people got pushed down, and now there's individuals stuck in there.  Blocked in by all the corpses?  I dunno.

On the bright side, the siege seems to have got bored and left.  Which is good, I suppose, because a tantrum dwarf managed to find the front door lever.

Also, if you see some deaths, you can 'z'oom to the location of a report from the 'r'eports menu - that way you can see what is going on and not just seeing "Urist McUnlucky has been struck down." and shrugging it off since it's a pain to find.

yeah, i was trying to use that, but all I saw was a mob of dwarves running randomly...  I couldnt' even identify if they were being herded by the culprit.   But anyhoo..

So I'm down to 10.  Any way I can help the survivors get out of the tantrum spiral?   This fortress is caked in blood and miasma.

Do they have bedrooms? Bedrooms are the natural enemy of the tantrum spiral, because you can lock in anyone who goes to sleep angry and not let him out until he becomes happy from admiring his quality furnishings or goes berserk and starves to death.

Also, did you check the civilization names yet, as to which civilization created your original embark and which one the rioting dwarves are members of?

Hm, either the civil war is over, or there was never a proper rebellion.  There's only one civilization with some random name.
