I was able to discover an underground cave river because a frogman corpse showed up in the 'corpses' area of my Stocks list, where I had previously encountered none. I was able to zoom to the location which showed solid rock, to which I dug and found the river.

Also, (before I noticed the corpses list) I kept getting random announcements of (A cave crocodile has given birth to a cave crocodile hatchling,) where to the best of my knowledge there weren't any on the map.

Absolutely.  It's a bit convoluted though.  z to get the Status screen, choose menu item Stocks to get the Wealth screen, press up-arrow four times.  You're now on the corpses category.  Press right-arrow to switch to the right side list, then press tab to expand the list.  You can now choose a corpse, then press z to zoom to its map location.
