I started with Mayday's tileset (probably from one of the old "noob packs") and found it highly confusing. It may have been DF itself that caused the confusion, I don't know. After a while I tried ASCII just to see what it's like and loved it right away, without any experience with other ASCII-based games. The only thing I needed to do was to make my own 12x12. I need a square set and the 16x16 is way too big.

Only ever played with ASCII... Took about two weeks to not have my hand hovering over the k button.

Ditto.  Playing Dwarf Fortress is like reading a book to me.  The more of my imagination I have to use, the more fun it is.

Not that having a tileset really changes it that much.  I was also too lazy to find and install one.

I switched tile-sets 2-3 times, and eventually got really good at figuring out what each thingy was, and all I needed to do was stare at the screen for a couple seconds. After that, figuring out ASCII was really not a problem.

The only time I really use k these days is to double check if that was Sphalerite or Tetrahedrite, Gold or Limonite, Cassiterite or Copper, Silver or Galena- But those two are the same anyway but its nice to know what I am dealing with. Oh and to check the Gender of animals/stuff...

I tried a Graphicspack, lasted 3mins...

i played a lot of Adventure Mode so it takes a lot longer to stop useing k all the time, i use it more now than i did back in 40d.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

I only used tilesets once, out of curiosity. I prefer the ASCII myself, despite playing no rogue-likes (or any game with ASCII graphics for that matter) before DF. I had more trouble with the controls than with the graphics themselves.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I started on ASCII. Took about a week to figure the important stuff out, some weeks to figure everything out.

Yes.  Easily.  It's all in the init.txt.
Well that and you need a square tileset.

I prefer the ASCII. I got used to it in about two weeks, and found that the texture packs slowed down my game a bit more than I liked.

I played ADOM and other roguelikes for a long time before finding DF, and I prefer to use my imagination than stare at some nondescript blobs of pixels anyway. :P Naturally I had to learn what all the varied symbols meant, of course.

It's the graphics packs that look like vomit to me. What do you mean, the natural spelling of my fortress includes two cabinets and a cat?
