I'm getting the hang of it. It helped a lot buying some starter items from the market.

I also got enough money to buy an archer. So I have 8 in my army. I could have got 2 mages though (both level 1, archer was 2)...hopefully the mages wouldn't have been better. I can always earn more gold I guess.

Mages are very particular, suggest to not get them until you're further along and we can tell you how to use them.

My inclination for a start is a couple of priests, the rest split archers/warriors. 1 mage optional, but they tend to die a lot and be deadweight at early levels. Later, you can make a camp/tower/castle and stick guys in there to passively level up, and only add them to your party when they are a few levels on, rather than babysitting someone who's just going to die all the time.

._.
So I'm still doing badly with sickness (though stabilizing slowly), and my garrison seems a'ok!
Just a tiny query for the more experienced fellows here :O
...Details! Right.

I have a garrison of 8--1 level 6 mage, 2 level 4 warriors, and the rest are level 1 green recruits [2 archers; one slinger and one longbowwoman. 1 Warrior, 2 priests.] (with 'optimal' 18 CON and such in their affinity attribute from recruiting all over the world x_x), and armed them with the best armor I...currently have (all have plate+5, and associated weapons with +5 attack factor and +5 damage), complete with large steel shields and helms.

And I have two battles in a whole day. Woo!

However comparing the two...
How...did the first even occur? It translates to 'nothing happened (like fleeing) but they gave us gold!' in how I see it.
Quote
Day 2283   We attacked a group of 9 Centaurs and crushed them like the maggots they are!
The battle lasted 5 rounds, and 0 spells were cast.
We dealt out 134 in damage, and sustained 0 deaths.
In return, we took 3 in damage, and inflicted 6 deaths.
We gained a total of 371 xp and 378 gold from the battle

Day 2282   We attacked a group of 5 Centaurs and 5 Harpys and crushed them like the maggots they are!
The battle lasted 1 rounds, and 0 spells were cast.
We dealt out 0 in damage, and sustained 0 deaths.
In return, we took 0 in damage, and inflicted 0 deaths.
We gained a total of 0 xp and 360 gold from the battle
Because as I remember from my newbie experience--Centaurs and Harpies at this number was at the chance: None whatsoever area, or at least the 'it'll be even' or something.

tl;dr: I'm confused and need guidance in understanding battle logs.

I often enough run across enemies that are literally 1 round of poison damage away from dying and poisoned. Initiate battle - they're dead before I attack. I've already seen this 3-10x this year so it isn't unlikely that group remnants like that are engaging your garrison.

You don't get xp if you don't attack/cast but it is effectively free money.

Most players don't bother to spend the turns to go after monsters that ran away in the open world.

I finally managed to open the construction interface: it requires party level 10, not 8.

So far, a tower requires 15 wood, 8 iron, 6 stone, 16 clay, and 150 turns without construction skill.

If we can create a database about this, we could calculate the required gold and turn costs, and the effects of construction skill in building.

EDIT:

Other costs:
-Tower upgrade: 18w, 16i, 12s, 22c, 200t.
-Market level 1: 6w, 2i, 2s, 4c, 5t.
-Barracks level 1: 8w, 4i, 4s 3c, 5t.
-Runes level 1: 1000 gold, 5 turns each.
-Barracks level 2: 16w, 8i, 8s, 6c, 10t

150 turns without construction skill.

Yikes.

...well, I don't have the time to use all my turns anyway, so I guess it's as good a use as any.

Construction skill makes a huge difference it seems, I have 2 level 10 construction people. Upgrading from fort to castle with them is 31 turns.

I don't think the Construction skill makes a difference to building barracks etc, because the costs for me for those per level go 5 turns, 10 turns, 15 turns, 20 turns etc. So the level 10 barracks cost me 50 turns, and building all the levels costs a total of 55 x 5 = 275 turns. Someone else can compare the turn costs for those without any skill plz.

For those wondering whether mages are worth it:  I think maybe they are.

A few days ago, I came across a group of 8 orc lords led by a bandit leader.  My guys were all levels 9-10 at the time.

When I clicked attack, the game advised against it.  I did it anyway, to see how tough they'd be.  The orc lords were pretty tough, but the bandit leader was a very heavy hitter and was hard to hit.

After a couple of rounds, the bandit leader was slowed, weakened, entangled, and confused by my two mages, rendering him ineffective.  I might have been able to win that battle without the mages, but I would have taken way more damage.

I suspect the mages will be even more useful at higher levels when I run into even tougher foes.  Perhaps you guys with level 20+ characters can confirm this.

Mages are great for locking down those special enemies you sometimes come across. Or generally, just locking down enemies

You can get the same from scrolls though, no real need to have the mages in your party.

Energy bolts are guaranteed hits, if your party is not up to snuff in landing attacks.  I tend to run a party with 2 of em with level 10 recall.  If its a tough battle, Auto Cast all the way.  They start with 50 energy bolts and can last 2-3 separate dungeon runs in a level 4.

Personally, I can't be arsed to go about the management of creating said scrolls.  So yea, that is my perspective.

Interesting point about scrolls.

If you have no mages, how hard is it to find the scrolls you need?

If you're just keeping mages in a garrison and making scrolls with them, is it worth the micromanagement?

You can buy em from a player willing to make AND sell em.  Stores usually do not sell any pre-spelled scrolls.  Player transactions for scrolls might involve a lot of clicking, depending on how the auction house handles stacks of spelled scrolls.

That is up to you, if you rather run with more warriors or whatever, rather then bring 1 or 2 mages... AND still really want access to the mage spells, then it might be worth it.  (For me, it is not.)
