The obvious problem with this game at the moment, is that players who have been playing the game a couple of weeks can raid towns
trivially. Defence is more of a challenge, as you have to rely on the AI's judgement during battles. Active players can do smart stuff, like target enemy casters first, and use their own casters sensibly and optimally. For the defenders to win, they need to outclass their attackers by a
significant degree, which seems backwards in my opinion.
The Bay 12 driven orgy of town raiding currently in progress means that mayors have a seriously shortened life expectancy right now. We really shouldn't be surprised if our mayors are struck down by "friendly fire" - when everyone is trying to accumulate towns at the same time, it can only lead to chaos. One player's cherished hometown is just another loot drop to the next player.
Perhaps we should have a moratorium on town raids for a while whilst we get our house in order. If people want gold and chests and loot, there are these things called
dungeons you know! A couple of day's turns spent in a level 2 dungeon netted me about 30k in gold. I don't know how that compares with town taxation, but at least I didn't have to risk treading on any toes to get it.
Have Mages been increased to any form of usefulness so far?
My level 12, 32 INT mage did 41 damage with his last cast of flame, which seemed pretty useful. And you can always kit them out in full plate with an attack-factor enhanced halberd until that point.
