There should be a release in the next couple of weeks (or so), which will hopefully nerf the "slash and burn" tactics that have been so prevalent. Which might make it easier to re-establish mountain home :)

To the sewers with you newbie.  You are condemned to killing rats till you level up a few and gain some better gear.

On that note, what is your party make-up? 
Mages are super squishy, so you need to put them on defense.  I can suggest you do not start with any, instead recruiting them later.  Otherwise, good armor, hat and dual shields on defense mode till you hit around level 5-7.  Still, focus on putting your best armor on them anyways.
Clerics are decent to have, just set their spells to all heals, forget the buffs.  Their heals will suck a lot for the first few levels.
Archers, they can use melee weapons just fine too, probably not as well as Warriors if you don't stack their strength.  Less HP then Warriors.
Warriors, meat shields.  Throw any melee weapon on them.  Super low maintenance in compare to the others.

Agility = Defense and Ranged Accuracy
Constitution = Turn efficiency and more carry weight
Strength = Melee Accuracy and more carry weight
Divinity = Cleric stuff
Intelligence = Mage stuff

Don't feel bad about restarting your party so early.

Well i made a adventurein party with 3 dorfs (2 warriors 1 priest) 1 elf (Archer called "Elf coward") and a Human mage (called "Token Human").
Reaching lvl 3 right now.
