They are with the mayor.  Reckon you can assume that they are weaker then Elites unless it is an older player.

If you take over a town, can you remove your mayor and abandon it?

The garrison you leave in a town stays with the mayor in the back room, forming the mayor's guards.  And you can simply relinquish mayoralty.

Ok thanks, is there any limits on that you know of?

Edit:
Summarized - is there any point taking over a city short term, grab gold, raze buildings, cause trouble etc - if the intention was just a raid.

It's not really practical.  You can raid the treasury without dealing with the mayor, so there's not much purpose.  A low-prosperity town with no treasury is in serious trouble, with or without you razing buildings.

I managed to get a castle up with level 8 barracks. I'm pretty certain building skill stacks as well. I have 2 level 10 construction characters, and when they were both at a location, it was quicker. It didn't seem to matter whether they were in the garrison or party as far as I can tell, as long as they were at the site. I'm going to train up a few more construction characters next time. For people who don't know what skill to give a fighter after Berserker Rage, Construction is a good choice, since fighters have great encumberance and Construction isn't tied to a stat, by level 20 they make a great materials mule and builder.

I guess a party of 8 builders would be good, but since the other guy seemed to help while in the garrison (need to double-check this, build times were better with two, but seemed the same whether one was in the garrison or in the party), the potential limit might be 16 Construction skills stacking at once. Since it's 100's of turns to completely build out a castle with a level 10 barracks/market this might actually be worthwhile to pursue. So I think I'm going to churn a generation of fighters with Berserker Rage/Construction, since people report Shield Bash and Eagle Eye aren't really that great.

Be aware there may be changes that limit the number of characters you can own, so having too many utility characters might be prohibitive.

It won't be an issue with the berserker/construction guys, since the secondary combat skills weren't that great anyway, they'll still make excellent guards. I'd sell off some of my older chars possibly too.

So how does upgrading work? Give money, get upgrade? Is there a cap? What's blacksmith skill account for?

I've got an indestructable short sword I'm looking to upgrade.

I'd probably suggest upgrade plate armor (find ones with durability > 220), at the god-like blacksmith. it's a waste of money using worse blacksmiths, sometimes even "excellent" blacksmiths take your $12800 and don't manage to upgrade anything. Armor is more important to upgrade first than weapons I think, since it helps your whole party. At God-like blacksmiths I got my 18 Def plate armor up to 41-42 defence points on everyone in my party. It's cheaper too, since armor only has one stat to raise, while weapons have two, and you pay to raise each stat separately.

the indestructible short sword is a bit meh, they're pretty common. I'd suggest save up until you find something more special. e.g. I have some indestructible weapons with additional poison attacks. Eventually you'll find and indestructible longsword or something anyway. But, the first level of upgrades is only $200 so you might as well.

The cost doubles or quadruples each upgrade, the most you can get is +5 to attack or damage per upgrade. So you can upgrade your sword +5/+5 for 2x$200 = $400. but to get higher levels gets more and more expensive.

Hmmmm, okay.

Where's the godlike blacksmith? And if it's on the map consider this my request for access to the map. :P

They come and go as blacksmiths rise in skill over time. But they randomly retire, so only a very few hit God-like. Frogford (44, 3) is the current location, at least a couple of days ago.

btw sent you the map link. Cities are color coded based on the blacksmith level. green = good, purple = excellent or amazing, and God-like ones are a gold circle with an anvil in it.

I made a party for the game. Where are we mostly based? I looked back a few pages, and unless I missed it...I couldn't find the coordinates we are at. I saw the town name, but no idea where that is.

Heck, don't even know what to do :P Tried going into the sewers but got kinda owned lol

Keep sewer diving until you don't get owned, generally level 2-3, then buy some better gear, and take quests for "kill x number of creatures near the town".  Right now your goal is to earn experience, gold will come later.

Chainmail is the key to early surviving, and putting all your priest spells into heal ASAP. chainmail + shortswords + crappy helm + crappy shield will do against rats. The trick is to buy 3 chainmail as soon as you start, for your front-row guys. If you start with an archer, you can sell all his sling ammo and give him a sword, and start with everyone in chainmail. Slings are sucky anyway, so after 1 trip down the sewers you can give him a crossbow or longbow.

I think we really need a cheat sheet with all the little starting tips.
