I'm Trafalgar on there. Haven't bought it (It's already given me 2 desertions, one in my first match or two when I was trying to find out if there was a way to switch ship equipment mid-game, and one for a game crash), but I've been playing for a couple days.

I had trouble registering my account too (my first password didn't work, I figured it was the & symbol in it and had to do a change password attempt four times before I got a usable email), and downloaded it from the (official?) torrent since the download page was just blank.

It uses Unity, so you would think it could be ported. I've mostly stopped playing myself, since it's effectively pay-to-win.

To be honest, the price appears to be perfectly reasonable. You're essentially playing a demo - an extremely complete one at that. It's not even a subscription!

I played for a week or so before deciding to stop playing and that it wasn't worth buying. I had some observations: First, it was unstable. Unless the client was restarted after every game or so, after a game or three it would screw up and ships would start teleporting around and the game would be effectively unplayable. I tried restarting during a game where it was doing this, and it kept doing it after I restarted and rejoined the game, for a couple of seconds, and then it crashed. I was unable to rejoin after, and was given a desertion.

I would occasionally meet enemies with ships who were so powerful that it was impossible to defeat them in combat no matter what, as a result of the way the game worked - the way it gives you loot for winning battles, less or none for losing, and better loot if your ship is a higher mark number (which you have to have played for a good while to have achieved, and paid for). You can't obtain the loot that paying players get if you have a mark I ship, so whether you're just new or haven't paid, your ships will be inferior.

I would not want to waste any money on the game when it may become unplayable in the future, even the near future, since the desertion counter has demonstrated an ability to go up through no fault of your own (as it has for me), and could easily go up again due to a power outage or internet failure while playing (even if I managed to avoid triggering the same bug that made the game unplayable and then crashed it). The only way to get clear the desertion counter is to make a new account (losing your ships and paying status, if you paid, I expect), and people's attitudes towards it are "That person is a deserter! Don't play with them!"

Yeah, the game has great potential but it requires a lot more work, if the devs are encouraged by the new players i think this might be more than enjoyable in a couple of months.

*casts ressurection*

So the game came out on Steam for pretty cheap. It had some fairly serious problems on release, but from my experience yesterday, they have been fixed. It's still slightly laggy when in-game, but totally playable.

It's my first MOBA type game and I am loving since I am a sucker for space battles. I've been having quite a blast playing with people over the game's TS server. Does anyone here still play?

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) according to the urban dictionary. I think they're also referred to DOTA-like games or something like that.

Two teams, AI units follow map-specified routes from one base to the other and fight each other. As an element of the team you customise your character with items and skills, you level up, and try to push the enemy back. It's highly tactical and customisable, rewarding team-play and that kind of stuff.

This one's in space instead of some fantasy land, with spaceships instead of mages/warriors/etc :)

I assure you, it is very pleasant! Although there are free alternatives, though not in space (AFAIK). I do have to say that looking at gameplay videos makes the game seem super boring. I was totally unconvinced about DOTA games until I actually played this one. Now I get the fuss. The selling point being space and space-ships and space-guns and space-engines and space-skills and space-mines. Did I mention space-fun?

All of those types of games have been horribly elitist, starting right from DotA on Warcraft 3 and taking the game style and the "we don't need new players" all the way through.  For real, all of them I've attempted.  "Go replay the tutorial until you level up." and stuff.

Well, I don't think this community is there, at least yet. The devs provide a TS server, and it's full of newbies at the moment. I've played less than 10 games, and when I first got on I would enter a game and say "I'm a newbie", and everybody would be nice and helpful. I'd ask questions during gameplay and people would answer and tell me what to do.

I know the basics by now (although I've mostly flown the Corvette and am now trying the Support ship), so if anyone is interested starting out I might be able to give you a tip or two. I usually do a couple of games from 9pm until midnight EST.

No-one? Really? I've tried LoL with my wife (since that's free), and I'm finding I much prefer Stellar Impact. It feels more streamlined, where LoL feels a bit overly frantic and all over the place. Of course, I've only played a couple of games against bots... :)

I'm tempted to try it (I love space battles too!), but I'm not sure I can afford to buy any more games right now. I might get the demo portion of it to see how it goes ... playing the new Warband DLC now along with Starfarer, no time to spare!

I enjoyed the gameplay of LoL, but the playerbase put me off. If someone new would join the match, his/her team would immediately start with the hate speech. Ask a question? Get made fun of relentlessly, then told to die, or told that the team wants their entire family to be violated graphically until dead. It gets tiresome and drains the fun out of the experience.

If this game has a "community" like that one, I want nothing to do with it. Same with the original DOTA. Never bothered with any of the other variants, and probably won't bother with DOTA 2.
