Cirque Du ‼SCIENCE‼
« on: October 11, 2011, 09:06:07 pm »

K. I'm sure most of you have heard of slade, and that a few of you are aware of my ongoing studies with it. I have now some interesting findings. Having obtained and moved a slade boulder, I decided to build a mason's workshop right next to it to see what I can do.

Immediately, I noticed that I could have used the slade itself, but that would have defeated the purpose.

Of course, it's at this time that a troll decides to show up, and with ten dwarves (seven wrestling recruits), it'll be a hard fight. Assuming I can make it past this beast, I shall continue my story within the hour...

If needed, Runesmith can render the troll suddenly unable to breath.

Nah, I got him. More importantly, I have discovered that slade can, in fact, be carved into blocks:

I thought I heard that slade was not useable as a stone due to lack of classification. Does this mean that you can make slade statues and such?
(Also, is it magma-safe as a stone?)

It has no defined temperature limits, so it'll take the default "stone" template, and is thus NOT magma safe.

It is slade.
In terms of weight, it is the evil opposite to Adamantine.
Unless I'm mistaken, it's the heaviest and strongest substance in existence.
It is everything proof.

If I'm not mistaken, it's stronger than adamantine if modded/glitched/mooded into armor form. And don't get me STARTED on warhammers  :P

I would imagine that a dwarf would get thirsty and become rather unhappy in the process of hauling slade, if only because of its tremendous weight.

Well, considering that all of my dwarves are pissed that I haven't even started a booze industry and that they're all in the military with no equipment, I think hauling billion-ton boulders of pure evil is the least of their worries.

EDIT!!!!!

So much for that, my dorfs met their fate to a zerg rush from the crundle scourge. I'll have to try again, but so far my results are hopeful.

I just had a terrifying idea...  If it's possible to channel upwards into slade and remove it...  Is it possible to channel upwards into SMR and receive an SMR boulder?!

I don't think so. With the possible exception of adamantine, I think dropping a boulder on something is usually lethal.

You can channel down into slade as well.  It removes the floor tile, but leaves the wall underneath it, which cannot be removed.  The way to harvest slade is to come at it from the bottom, isn't it?

Wrong. Items don't do damage when they fall on things.

I've had weird results during testing... inconclusive, at best. I can't seem to replicate any one method of obtaining a slade boulder, intentionally or otherwise... It's starting to bother me, and the only solution I've got right now is to either

a) use controlled cave-ins to collapse the slade walls of the structures, or
b) use the unseen layer thing to channel down into slade walls, if possible.
