Yes we need light, and lighting grues is a formidable way to repel them.
Research a polymorph item spell, then cast it on the stick afterwards. In the light of a burning grue.

You cast fireball and wrap it around your arm, It continues to burn but it doesn't burn you, giving you enough light to see the rapidly advancing creatures.

Wow...when the fire hit 'em, they melted, then exploded. Why is everything exploding around you?!? Its hard to draw proper explosions!

You step over the remains of the burning .... What should these things be called?

You see lights up ahead and walk towards them.
The walls are smoother here, and lights are set regularly along the tunnel. There is a door, a hole and then the rest of the tunnel, the lights eventually.
"HEY, you! come over to this door. Please don't leave me here!" a  female voice yells from the other side of the door.

Let's call them Darkbit Because of their dark hides (or whatever it is) and the bit part as in bite.
Or Darkbyte sounds fine as well.

Lick the runes written on the shrunken GLOWING BOOK OF MAGIC, as you might enhance your cosmic powers by doing that (and gain a few nifty voice-commanded spells).

You look for a dig spell in the book, you find one, however it's too hard for you to do at this stage in your magical career. You could do the ritual version, but that requires mole-bones, worm's sting, and dirt that has not been touched by man or woman(Of all or any races.)
You lick the magical runes in the book and get a brisk shock. Ow. But luckily your tongue hasn't gone numb.
You don't think casting glassball in such a confined area is a good idea. Considering it shoots a ball of glass that explodes and then ricochets uncontrollably. Also, its technically a war-crime to use.
"What the hells are you doing over there?"
Tim wanders over and looks through the bars. He sees a pale girl, with blue eyes and black hair. Her eyes seem to see into the pit of your souls.
"Bout time! Who are you?"
Tim has entered into a conversation mode. You can't leave until I say so. Hah!
