Where can I find a Platypus?
« on: October 11, 2011, 03:41:44 pm »

Hey, starting a new fort, looking for a good embark. After a few forts, I'm wanting to be more discerning about my embark location.

This got me thinking, how can I be certain to find an embark that will bring Platypus? Will the same embark have giant platypus and platypus men? my last 3 embarks had moose men and badger men, along with giant moose and badgers, but they were all located around the same terrifying forest.

Anything short of scouring the map in adventure mode? or would that even work?

Usually they like to hang around in lakes and rivers, if that helps.

I suppose you could mod the Dwarf civilization to have domesticated platypi. Then you could just embark with them.

[BIOME:ANY_RIVER][BENIGN]

So, any actual river (not brook) embark, at any savagery level, might have them.  It's not guaranteed however.

[FREQUENCY:10]

They're fairly rare.

[POPULATION_NUMBER:15:30]

If they occur, you'll see a fair number of them.

[CLUSTER_NUMBER:1:1]

But only one at a time.

Would this be hard to do?

Another option is to just kick up the FREQUENCY to 100 and give dwarves [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] under the entity_default.txt file. The latter also guarantees the ability to embark with or request from the caravan any of the upper cavern level creatures. That little addition is the first thing I do whenever I get a new version of Dwarf Fortress.

Any creature that they have access to will show up on the embark screen or be available for purchase via the caravan screen. For dwarves to have access to an animal requires that it can appear within the biomes that fall inside the territory of that dwarven civ and is allowed under the civ's entity file. Animals that appear in the first cavern layer that have PET or exotic pet status are also available.

By default, dwarves don't have access to Good or Evil animals, but this can also be altered by adding [USE_GOOD_ANIMALS] or [USE_EVIL_ANIMALS].

Other options useful include:

RIVER_PRODUCTS allows dwarves to embark with fish other than those who appear in ANY_POOL or caverns. OCEAN_PRODUCTS allows the same, but with ocean going fish.
OUTDOOR_PLANTS and OUTDOOR_TREES allows them to use surface plants or wood rather than strictly the subterranean variety.

Good and Evil plants/trees have similar options, but are bugged right now and won't appear regardless of settings.

... if you don't mind revealing why you're determined to find platypi(?) in the first place? The curiosity is killing me.
