You don't currently have access to stone but you could make a pick with the 1 stone you already have, I'll say a stone pick triples the amount of stone you can gather per turn or something along those lines

Isn't the stuff all around me stone? Or is this a dirt cave? That's fine, I intended to use the stone I have gathered already to make the pick.

No it was just the "else gather wood" bit that confused me, and it is a stone cave 

I assumed that a pick would need some wood, but if I can scrounge the materials for a stone pick then I'm all for it.
