Wallbend: Mixed democracy/community fort!
« on: October 10, 2011, 06:36:02 pm »

Hey folks, I'm totally a newb at DF, so I thought I'd learn by enslaving you all to teach me collectively muahahaha!

After we've grown a bit, we'll have you guys take up individual dwarves!

Current debate/vote: What do we do?

After I get the basic idea of what everyone thinks, I'll go along with that and execute it.

This thread will have plenty of screenshots, and I'll keep maps here: http://mkv25.net/dfma/

I'd post saves, but I don't want any more competition than I already have!

Log:
1. I made a world, the only custom settings I chose were: Large world, and Very long history (762 years)
2. Embarked here using default embark:

You're a noob? Okay, let's see:

-Nonsavage, ideally good embark to cut down on dangerous wild animals. In a good, benign environment, all you need to fear are unicorns and the occasional lucky badger.
-Lots of trees and other plants.
-Clay is helpful to me, but can be skipped varying on your playstyle.
-NO AQUIFER.
-A river is a good idea.
-Depending on your playstyle, either flat to allow easy harvesting of surface plants, or cliffy to allow you to dig into a cliff face.
-Small to save on FPS. 3x3 works well for me, sometimes 2x2. The default 4x4 might work on your computer.
-Reverse any of these except the last to give yourself a challenge. Ideally pick the one you have least idea how to deal with.

To make stream name obvious, put dwarves undeground for years, then make a meeting zone at the source of stream.

Or invent a way to injure their guts. Let there be the guild of Vomiters!

EDIT: As for megaproject, we can make a magnificent waterfall, 50 urists high, with stream 20 tiles wide and 5 tiles thick. With statues everywhere.

Did you know that the Russian word for "sock" is "no sock"?
I just saw a guy with two broken legs push a minecart with a corpse in it. Yeah.

I like this idea, but we need to get a decent fort built up first.

Haven't done anything yet.

I vote for building an above ground main fortress more or less where you embarked with the only access point being a bridge that connects to the other highest Z level cliff at the top left. Either that or just build the fortress on the gap between those two land masses. Bonus points if there's a well in your barracks leading all the way down to the stream.
