Hunter drowned himself
« on: December 31, 2007, 06:53:00 pm »

I started right next to a river.  Within a minute of the start of the game, my hunter was in the river and had drowned himself.

If it's relevant, his skills were: +3 Woodcutter, +3 Carpenter, +2 Axedwarf, +1 Herbalist, +1 Ambusher.  He didn't have an axe yet.

Look for fish in the river.  One of them might have dragged him in and caused him to drown.

Maybe he didn't trust your leadership skills and took the easy way out?

The nearest fish is a lungfish, but that is 14 squares away.  The only other creatures around are hippos.

It happened again.  The very next game, the hunter got into the river and died.

Even if a creature managed to pull him in, I still think this is a bug.  Even if a fish managed to pull him in, the AI shouldn't let dwarves go that close to a river  unless they're fishing.

maybe you should give your hunter dwarf swimming too if they're going to blindly jump in a river in order to hunt something

The combat AI has trouble avoiding liquid filled squares. I've seen many dwarves jump into a magma vent to kill the fire imps inside. There's not much you can do to prevent these deaths.

Despite being a serial fire-imp-killer, I have never seen a dwarf jump into the magma after them.  Instead, I have seen many dwarves - always drafted miners - apparently fall in after wrestling at the edge.  This might be what you're witnessing (and it might not).

Nah. 3 dwarves in quick succession jumped into the magma to attack a fire imp that's at least 3 elevations below and 5 squares away. Well I think they were going to attack the imp, because that imp and the magma man at the bottom were the only two creatures left in the vent. I've also seen wardogs dive in too.

Reminds me of an episode of Futurama.

I've seen the human caravan guards jump into a volcano to attack something inside.

Yeah, I got a lot of that too. Newbie wrestlers tend to fall off edges rather easily.

Maybe what's happening here is that the Imp is close enough to the edge that your soldiers are trying to do a charge attack as you can do in adventure mode? For the rest, it appears that Z elevation code is not implemented yet. This is why they get scared to easily, and might be why they are stupidly rushing to their death. The code simply take them as an ennemy at the same Z axis and they charge.
