Yet.

Honestly, getting tired of this guy. I can't kill him off every time he's elected, since I don't want to keep losing skilled workers who have the misfortune of being d**ks. Not to mention the mayor keeps changing due to the beatings making him unpopular, meaning the new one goes around punching people until I notice why he's pissed (no rooms etc at all due to it being attributed to the OLD mayor).

Is there some way I can like, gag him so he just sits there and stops issuing mandates. If there's some way to keep him alive but incapacitated it would be great (assuming I don't lose out on anything with him like that)

I usually just let my mayor hang around in his rooms. Since the furniture inside makes all rooms legendary, he is always happy and I completly ignore any mandates he makes. Since he has no work, and thus hangs around with the other unoccupied dwarfs all the time, he has so many friends he gets elected every time.

This means:
no mayor-related micromanagement
no deaths
no mandates to worry about (except trade bans)
= much easier fortress life :D

Yeah except I just had a glass maker punched unconscious for ignoring a mandate. RIGHT next to a blade trap. I have the justice enforcement guy (unarmed) so that people don't get unhappy thoughts when crimes are unpunished and plan on keeping him, just wish I could minimise the situations involving "innocent" dwarves. The ones that flip out and kill someone are welcome to pass out on the traps.

You can manually reassign your Mayor through the Nobles screen.

Also, you should probably set up a proper jail with chains and food/drink stockpiles so Justice doesn't default to a beating all the time.

I usually try to elect a major myself that has somewhat reasonable likes, to avoid too much punishment. And in the cases that fails, I have a small prison set up with luxurious cells with a table, chair, bed and food/drink stockpile. Having a jail prevents most beatings, and more often than not the dwarfs imprissoned stays extatic due to the nice furniture and food.

But in some forts I do the complete opposite. I don't build jails, but  raise a sizable fortress guard, all armed with hammers. The resulting violence fits DF well and reminds me of the good old <= .40 days, where I usually had a legedary skilled hammerer running around taking care of all the dwarven justice.

I once had a perfect baron. He was always happy, never issued mandates and never pissed me off. I even know why he acted like that. Do you want to know the secret?

Build a grid of floor grates above the entire city. Draft a squadron of masons and bomb the crap out of the city with falling constructed walls.

Most dwarves in my fortress have a long background of murders... mostly bearded ladies who hacked their husband who came back from war and were tantruming their rooms. The new migrants are mens..... is that random or the game sent more males afterward.?

So, let me get this straight.  "I became big enough to have a mayor, never built him any rooms, never fulfill any mandates, AND I assigned an unarmed soldier to be my sheriff!  What's going wrong?"  EVERYTHING with this is wrong.  In systematic order, 1: wooden furniture and dig a hole in the wall, if it's carved out of stone you can just smooth it and get good value.  2: Ignore mandates, no one cares.  3: Dwarven fists REGULARLY cave in skulls.  This makes an unarmed sheriff possibly the most lethal thing to your dwarves you could have.  Make chains and cages for a prison OR don't assign a sheriff.  If you get a dwarf and tell him, "Go beat that guy, I don't care what happens" then you're going to get death.

Nah I had rooms made for the mayor, but the current mayor kept changing it seemed Wasn't a popular guy. as a result, I often didn't notice in time and he got pissed over it.
edit: the mayor was the one going around punching people. I would of given him a crossbow, but the last time I tried that he kept stealing ammo despite my best efforts to hide it. THAT did not go well.
