I second Azure Dreams.

It's sorta like a japanese-style roguelike. Since it's japanese, it's more tedious and time-consuming than a western roguelike, and in the process of dungeon diving, you also get to build up a town, woo a harem of girls, tame/breed some monsters, and find your missing father.

It was pretty fun, and took me awhile to beat when I was a kid. I remember being particularly attracted to the concept of fixing up and improving the town as you get deeper into the dungeon. As with all old games now, if I played it now, I think I would suck at it. Modern games have made me lose my stomach for the cruelty and tedium of japanese ps/ps2 games. :D

Ok, Azure Dreams sounds pretty good. Is it anything like Soul Blazer in that respect? The "rebuilding of the town" as you played on was less cool than it could have been.

Keep 'em comin.

I have vague recollections of LoD....but yes, I had the true grit required to enjoy King's Field, so stuff like that is right up my alley.

Mostly I'm posting this because I'm getting older and can't remember half the great games I played when PSX was in its heyday.

Azure Dreams and both Tomba!s are great.

Xenogears, Breath of Fire III and IV, Ape Escape, Legend of Mana, Threads of Fate, Board Game Top Shop, Megaman Legends, Brave Fencer Musashi.

Ape Escape made great use of the analog sticks!

Toy Wars (not the exact name) & Army Men come to mind.

GTA 2. You only said not to mention GTA 1 :P. It's a great game, but the PC version is even better.

Spyro 1. No, seriously. It's one of the best game's I've played.

Digimon World. No shit, this game is awesome. You'll have to play it to understand.

Siphon Filter. It's just a good game. Bloody hard, too.

Metal Gear Solid. It's also a good game. And it's also bloody hard.

Jade Cocoon. It's a very original game. You can combine monsters in it, which is probably the best part of the game.

Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3. They're some of the best games I've ever played. A perfect mixture of survival horror and action.

Silent Hill. It is one of the only games that has actually scared me. The only problem I have with it is it's length. I found it to be way too short.

The Tomb Raider games. I'm still trying to find a copy of each. They're just good games.

Fear Effect. On here only for the size of the game. NOTE I haven't played Fear Effect since I was a wee little youngster, it may not even be good.

Rainbow 6. All of them. I just found them fun. Better than all of that Call of Duty garbage out nowadays.

Now we're cookin' with gas.

Quote
Legend of Mana

For PSX? This I had not seen. (Holy crap, I can see why.)

Quote
Megaman Legends

Good call

Quote
Xenogears

I never got around to playing this. I guess I should change that.

Quote
Army Men

Rented 99% of them back in the day. I think I probably don't need to relive that.

Quote
Monster Rancher

Ooooh, good call.

I also just realized: Bushido Blade! How could I forget.

Dino Crisis 2.  My absolute favorite game of the PS1.  After the disc got broken, I fell in love with Resident Evil 3.

And yeah, Monster Rancher's awesome.

I agree with Dino Crisis. One and two.
