Really? Never seen 'em

It would be fun to see gobbos bringing children to sieges with them like dorf mothers do if they are in the military. Then i can have goblin baby roasts ^_^

What if goblins are just creatures with no self-control? They want to go torture something, sure go right ahead, they want to randomly go to war with the civilization that murdered many regiments of them? Why not? They do the most interesting thing for them to do and if that means torturing your brother, go do it. Wanna elect a demon as ruler-for-life why the hell not?
They only do things because it is fun to do them, at least it is for goblins.
A snatcher may have children but then he gets bored of the ones he kidnapped, and then goes steals another one, who entertains him and then he gets bored of that one and so on.
The snatcher thinks he's freeing the child from a life of total boredom and into a life of entertainment and fun.
The children, lacking proper attention, discipline, and sense of community that comes from living in a Dwarven fortress, become like goblins themselves, unable to pick up the plow or hammer and just do something because it's worth it or because people are counting on you.
So they base their civilization around this lack of order and law, because its FUN.

The king has returned. Nice to see the thread was saved from another possible major derail.

Anyway, no new progress on the beneath-cavern testing facility(been busy), but filiusenox's theory did give me an idea:

What if the goblins are similar the prawns in district 9?

They are intelligent, emotional beings who live in very large numbers, but lack any sense ownership. Mayhap they steal children, not because they are tying to spite anyone, but because they simply like kids. They see dwarven children and take them because, to them, there is nothing wrong it.

At the very least, it's a possibility. I'm going to have to contemplate this idea a little further...

Sounds like an awesome theory. Unlikely, but that would be awesome. 'Cos you know, everyone knows goblins can't !!SCIENCE!!, they can only science. Plus we've already got a whole page worth of talk of 'saving' and theories with it.

Can you cage friendlies at all? Anyone ever tried caging friendly caravans?
You could use Runesmith to teleport it into the arena though. Never tried DFusion.

That nature reserve idea sounds amazing. Please keep us posted as I work to recruit/arm a couple dwarven scouting squads to explore the caverns(when I have the time to play, of course)

Quick question, how would you rate the combat abilities of olm people?

Haven't fought a lot of them, had a mason killed by one armed with a spear though, so I guess as with everything else in DF, you shouldn't ignore them.
Plus I love recruiting everydwarf... When the minatour attacked I had 91 militia dwarves at my disposal.
Shame it was only a child minatour ;3
Plus I think I'll create an alt save to try and find the caverns (and to see if the antmen are not present in apocalyptic numbers).
If I find large amounts of them, I'll see if my 91 dwarves can deal with them ;P
Then I'll just savescum and plan to capture them, plus I heard somewhere if they kill something they become friendly.
Semi-megabeasts, goblins and animal men. Best nature reserve I've heard of.
Digging it out is REALLY tedious though.
This is going to be a great experiment, maybe the snatchers will go for the antmen babies, maybe the antmen will retaliate, what will the minatour do? Questions questions....
Hell when it's finished my hunters could hunt in it ;P
