I currently have an immigrant being strangled by a werewolf for almost half a year now and still living. There certainly is some bug at work here.

I bet someone could mod that fairly easily.
Removing the Brain and making the beard act like one.

Just today I had a berserking dwarf attack a boa only to get his head bitten, poisoned and then shaken around for 211 pages of combat reports, my theory would be that when they're getting attacked really rapidly, they might just be essentialy too busy getting hurt to die.
