Hmm. So, I finally got around to pre-ordering this and grabbing the latest version, since it's been a long time since I actually tried it out. Sadly, it crashes constantly. Not sure exactly what causes it, although it seems to be related to when I pause or unpause the game.

Here is the most recent log.

This looks like a 'Run as admin' based problem, tried it?

Sorry about the delay guys! Yeah, try running as admin, if it doesn't work it will most likely be an ATI card problem, which we are currently working on fixing!

I'm rather interested in this, as it looks like it is basically a whole game based around the best part of DF where you don't have massive management and FPS problems, and have just bought it. Looking forward to future improvements.  :)

Okay, the one thing I'm really wishing for more than anything else is the ability to zoom out, as I like to be able to work from more of an overwatch position, and the fixed zoom level is driving me bonkers.  :P

Unless of course I derped and the function is hidden somewhere I didn't see.

I too would really like out-zooming. I do realize this will then need a whole new set of graphics for each zoom level since this is not 3d.

Question: I was playign the demo and at some point all my dude stop moving and doing anything. They had a flashing werid symbol witha  ren line over them. I could not make out what that was supposed to mean, It kinda looked like a loaf of bread. Did my guys die of hunger? Maybe a death sprite would be nicer. If they werent dead and instead decided to just stand there because they were hungry instead of eating an apple on the ground right next to them, then I think thats something that needs changing.

The tutorial didnt seem to explain things to me. I am offering this up as constructive criticism from a new player. Not to be nit-picky.

Its what known as the hunger locked. the citizen are so starved they cant even work, just eat. they will starve to death afterwords.

This is being revised.

Bought it on Desura, Linux 64-bit (Thanks for the option, btw!) A few things I noticed: (and yes, I understand it's alpha...)

  • Hunger Lock sucks... maybe boost food priority if one person is starving?  Maybe food making is the only thing they do when hungry (at a loss off efficiency), and of course, they eat what they make.
  • Trees grow a bit too fast.  I can clear the map, but it takes a lot of menial work.  If I don't try to clear, they just get in the way and I can't see sieges. ... maybe well traveled paths could stamp bushes as well as prefer paths for pathfinding?  Roads?
  • Need to be able to fill in a hole.
  • Mine Shafts... love/hate here.  They render most other veins useless as you dig down, but it's nice to be able to pull iron out instead of digging down 4 levels to get a good stock.
  • Soldiers definitely need a way to retreat.  I haven't broken level 3 yet without killing off countless numbers of soldiers.  (exacerbated by no item drop on death!)
  • Dead people should drop equipped items.  This one is killing me when I lose a nice BP or weapon.  Maybe destroy N item(s) at random on death instead of dropping all?
  • Health leach as an item upgrade?  Elemental damages/resistances?
  • Healing bandages/salves?  (Or make it possible to direct to the hospital before <(N) health.  Partial healing options?  Regen health in hospital over time instead of one shot at the end of stay.)
  • Health bars?
  • Digging under a river isn't fun... maybe a warning like DF?  (Damp rocks? Not pausing, just no dig and tile change to reflect -- bluish, watery?)
  • Equipment screen will definitely be needed.  (Compare what soldier is wearing to what is available per slot?  Right now I have to jot down the stats to compare upgrade paths.)
  • Change how soldiering works a bit?  If you make a citizen a soldier they are always a soldier, but may be put in off-duty to act like a citizen.  Make citizens better at tasks to inhibit making everyone a soldier (armor/weapon lowering efficiency?)  Have "alarm" button to call up all soldiers.  Citizens run when attacked, soldiers on/off duty attack back.
  • Soldier Sentry locations? (dig "fox hole")  No movement, but higher defense.... dug in.
  • Perhaps when heroes are added, put in a path to make soldiers into heroes... (N kills, EXP bar... whatever) I tend to like to build my soldiers up to demi-heroes.  I assume heroes will be a little more controllable (leveling options and positional?)
  • There's a disparity between smoothed walls and regular walls... pick a height/width.  (preferably the short one underground with smaller width or toggle-able)
  • Mountains are really only one layer.  I turning them off in the gen file because it annoys that you can't dig into the side like DF.  They are aesthetic only.
  • Maybe add loot chests near big mobs (Spider queen, etc.)
  • Map zooming would be nice, but I understand the implications.
  • Mapping of controls.  I'm a WASD person, arrow keys suck.
  • Mapping of controls.  As much as I dislike DF's inconsistency with dig/designate controls/navigation it bothers me that I can't hot key tasks... maybe a hidden/hide-able "hotkey" bar that I could drop common tasks in?
  • Save state of Music on/off or add volume.  I have to turn it off every time I load the game.  (gets repetitive FAST)

VERY cool game though!!  Take the above as suggestions(comments/complaints), not orders. ;)

might be a java issue... the linux version on 64bit systems require a certain jvm for some reason (probably suns fault)

I second this, I think its probably the worst 'bug' there is. If you run out of food its game over, even if you have the ability to make food quickly, in my experience anyway.

Really, people who are that hungry should automatically go out and harvest food, then immediately eat it. Hungry people don't stand next to an apple tree starving to death while waiting for someone to suggest that they pick an apple!
