Vomit trap
« on: October 08, 2011, 12:07:51 am »

My dream is to create an open-air room above my entrance. The floor will be covered in hatches (over grates). Through use of burrows, I shall get my dwarves to go there periodically to vomit. When the seige comes, a pull of a lever and vomit on their heads. How do I encourage cave adaption?

I will commence work sometime this weekend.

Live the dream.

...though, in my experience, contaminants don't move around unless they're tracked by other creatures, or picked up in fluids. You might have to incorporate water in your trap, in which case it would be a vomit-suspended-in-water trap.

Vomit can't be dropped via hatches or bridges.  See: Sphalerite's flaming well - he had trouble because the messy well tiles can't be cleaned by opening a hatch.

Water still works to move it around, and really, when you've got vomit in water, then you've just got more vomit.

Your alternative would be, perhaps, to try and position dwarves over your hallway and vomit in unison as the siege approaches.  In fact, it may or may not be possible to vomit through a floor grate.  With people experimenting on Dwarven daycare, someone reported that a sheep vomited, and the child drank it, implying that the vomit passed through the floor grate and into the available water - or it may imply that the child was too stupid to drink from the water, and instead just licked the bars of the grate.

i slew and subsequently butchered a FB made of vomit. it gave 2 pieces of refuse called (FB name)'s vomit.
THAT would probly fall through a floor hatch, but i doubt it would give the "covered in vomit" affect you're probly hoping for.

Yeah, I thiink your only bet is to wait til you have cave adapted dwarves, then set up a system of grates and burrows for synchronized weaponized projective vomiting.  At the least, I think experiments with grates and vomit need to be done now...
Though my -guess- is blood has the same properties, so you could always just butcher a goblin on some grate and see if the blood drips thorugh.

It doesn't.  Contamination type objects - blood, vomit, forgotten beast extract, etc - don't obey gravity.  It'll remain on the grate.  It's even possible to get vomit or blood spatters floating in mid-air.

You'll need to use water to make "liquid vomit" and then throw it at the elves.

Failure. The blood and vomit just goes right into the water drainage. Oh well...

Why drain the vomit? Just drown the siege in it, then syphon it off and save it.

Better yet, put your vomitorium in a different area, and regularly flush it with water into a collection reservoir, which you use to drown invaders (slowly! Let the water trickle in, or better yet, repeatedly fill and drain teh chamber! Vomitboard your goblin siege!)

Suggestion: 1/7 wading area  with a drainage hatch leading into the vomit-resevoir. Use pumps to push the vomit water around, and add a drainage hatch in the target area to allow re-use of vomit-water.

This way, your dwarfs vomit directly into the water to be drained, allowing easier resource control. Of course, This assumes you have a way to get the wading pool set up in a reliable, vomit inducing location. Do remember to regularly change and add water, as some of it will evaporate, and if you have too much vomit and not enough water, it's just thinner vomit.

Do remember to regularly change and add water, as some of it will evaporate, and if you have too much vomit and not enough water, it's just thinner vomit.

I think there are a couple minor problems with this plan:

1) 1/7 water will evaporate quickly. Needs to be at least 2/7 (dwarves can still walk in 2/7 water, and it doesn't evaporate unless weather conditions cause it to).
2) Don't pumps magically remove contaminants? If so, then the vomit will disappear when pumped.

I think building a long trough of 3/7 water with ramps for access, sunlight in the trough but not on the ramps, and one or more floodgates to release the water would probably work well. Vomit can be collected ahead of time and stored for "emergencies".

You'll need to fill it exactly to 3/7 on every tile, or it will slosh around and some of the vomit will likely be destroyed, bucket brigade is probably the best method.

I picked 3/7 because 2/7 won't flow very far or very fast, and dwarves can still stand in 3/7 water. 4/7 starts them swimming, but they can't drown in less than 7/7, so 4, 5, or 6 might be an option as well; assuming dwarves vomit while swimming with no ill effects, the level should be picked based on how much is most effective in delivering the payload to the target area.

≈≈science≈≈ will be required.

One option for delivery would be to make one wall of the vomiteria floodgates adjoining the vomit-trap hallway so you can pull the lever and release a wave of vomit to fill the entire hallway with vomit quickly. Placing the vomiteria above the target zone with a wall of floodgates opening to pour the vomit out the side of the vomiteria and down onto the goblins would probably work too.
