Grand theft auto IV
« on: October 07, 2011, 06:45:49 pm »

RPS wrote about it today and I thought I would fire it up again. Anyone here have any mods they like, preferably performance enhancing ones?

Also if anyone can answer a question I had that'd be great.  How is this game for Co op?  Like if 4 people were to LAN this game would it be fun?

From what I understand co-op in sandbox games is generally represented by a simple formula:
if a = amount of fun you can have dicking around solo, x represents the number of players including yourself, and b represents the total amount of fun to be had, then b = ax.

Namely because you have someone to operate the helicopter while you jump cars into its rotors.

multi is fun, as long as you agree on rules/goals.

For real, if anyone's figured out a way to make the game actually run acceptably on a PC I'd be psyched to actually try it.

Multiplayer in this game is amazing fun.

Probably the best multiplayer for pure fun and messing around there is (along with RDR ofc). The airport is amazing fun.

I hate how you have to log onto the PC version though your XBLA account,
One of the worst ports I have played and if modding helps that, good. But yea I bought it on sale and got five hours into it.

Are you having the problem where, at a random point during the game everything slows down to a couple seconds per frame?

I had this issue and it took like two weeks to get a response from their support, but they did fix it. It was some DirectX setting. Saddly, that email account is long gone.

I think there's a GTA 4 - San Andreas mod. It basically makes the game into San Andreas with a lot of added stuff from what I've heard. It may still be in production, though.

you could just wait for saints row 3, I fucking loved the GTA games, finished every one up till I got to the craptastic pc port of 4, got 1/2 way though and gave up in disgust at the random slowdowns and braindead car handling, (yup, every time you turn on a motorbike you should go into a 2 wheel skid, that makes perfect sense and is fun too), reinstalled the entire 14 gig a few days ago after finishing saints row 2 (ok, so its not a good port to pc, but really thats only slightly dicky car mechanics that you get used to quickly enough) played for 30 secs, touched my forehead to my keyboard and turned it off

Saints Row 2 was just as bad of a port with the same issues for the most part. The difference is that there is a modding community that helped fix many issues for GTA IV. Saints 3 will no doubt be fun and I will have it for PS3, but only a fool would expect it to run on PC well. I hope they prove me to be a fool.

If I had it on PC, I'd definitely be playing the SA mod. Then again, I think SA is the absolute pinnacle of the GTA series while IV was just a massive, massive disappointment. Multiplayer is good, but even that only lasts so long. It's very possible I'm missing something here, but it just felt so... bland, and ordinary, and repetitive, and safe, especially in contrast to previous GTA offerings. The world has no variety, the characters are both less interesting and less entertaining, there's almost nothing outside the main plot to do (unlike SA, which had so much I can't even list it all), etc...
