Mace to the Face
« on: October 06, 2011, 07:00:56 pm »

So, I haven't encounters metal yet, but my military needs to start training. The default uniform is that of Axedwarf, but if a dwarf has a higher weapon skill, I change it appropriately.

My problem is with training weapons. Swordsdwarves get training swords. Axedwarves get training axes. Hammerdwarves get crossbows...

But what about Macedwarves? My Military Commander is a macedwarf, and he's the only one without a training weapon. I didn't need ''training mace'' or ''really big crossbow'' options... is there any way I can give him something to train with that isn't a proper mace?

Nothing safe I'm afraid, weakest thing you can get your hands on is probably an iron flail and that's still too deadly. Mind you, some beasties are unkillable by blunt trauma - anything really large and flesh balls come to mind.

What kind of training are we talking abut? If it's sparring, you don't need (nor really want) training weapons. Dwarves will only "lightly tap" each other in sparring. And you run the risk of a Dwarf becoming attached to a training weapon.

But if you're talking about training by fighting prisoners or critters, then You'll just have to accept that your macedwarves will have to use real weapons and you'll need a lot more prisoners for them. But at least they'll get more kills.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

the best thing is a feather wood mace but there rare, as in mood rare.
a copper mace and good helm is the best you can get, spines can get snap even with full armor.
yes df has killer whiplash.

edit fo ninja:
live training will work a lot better if you let them keep there chest and head armor and use a weak mace, the dwarfs will not have the quick kill route of headsmashing, thay will batter the  prisoners to an uncontuse pulp then try and smash the Helms till the  prisoner wakes or dies.

If you want a training mace (or war hammer), make it out of adamantine.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

No no no, you guys miss my point. I said I hadn't encountered any metal yet. No copper, No iron, no adamantine. If I had that I would, lol. I'm talking about wooden training weapons so they can practice their weapon skills while I wait on some metal for real weapons and armor. I can make weapons to practice every weapon skill, but not Macedwarf, because I didn't see an option. I was asking if there was some wreapon or another that would train it, like crossbows can do hammerdwarf.

If that's the case, then the answer is no - aside from modding, you cannot train the Maceman skill without using an actual mace, and maces must be made out of metal (unless you get a lucky strange mood).

Seal him off in the caverns and allow him to kill all the creatures in there, if he comes back, he will be a ninja!

I doubt a wrestler or a guy with wooden training weapons and leather/bone armor would be a match for a Draltha. Or a Cave Croc. Or a GCS... and even the naked mole dogs can cause Fun.

I guess you could just assign him a Spear/Sword/Axe uniform and have him train, instead of Individual Choice Melee.

Well the uniform for the entire squad is set to axedwarf, and I switch is manually depending on if the dwarf in question has better training in a different weapon. I solved my problem by waiting for a caravan to roll around, bought 2 iron anvils and melted them down, making them into two iron maces. They aren't silver, but they'll work until I get silver.

Also; unrelated question, but the wiki said purchased tame giant eagles don't breed, yet the two I just bought have no problem producing eggs... also no problem chasing down goblin snatchers, where as every other animal I own flees for the their lives. But will my eagles really not breed?

[PET_EXOTIC] creatures won't breed, or so I've heard. Make it [PET] and they will merrily hatch, eggsize and child tokens seem to be OK in vanilla raws (unlike some other egg laying animals, such as Helmet Snakes)
