What is your favourite embark size?

I use 2x2 because I like 100 fps.

5x5 because I like the surface space and anything above 30 FPS is fine by me.

I've found that embark size in itself doesn't really matter much. But, since you have more land area, your pathfinding will lag if your surface entrance is open.

That being said, keeping your surface closed off, or changing the surface to restricted traffic zone entirely, I've found that cuts quite a bit of lag normally attributed to embark size.

I usually just go with the default 4x4, unless I really want to include another biome or river or something.  My current volcano/brook embark is a 4x4 (many z-levels, though), and I had no trouble with framerate until I fired up the water pump stack.

I always do 4x4 out of habit. I could probably try a large embark area sometimes but... I dunno. Maybe.

Usually 3x3 for FPS reasons mainly(I like 200+ Dorf forts) but the current one is accidentally a 4x4.

Usually 2x2, but sometimes I go for 3x3. My most epic fort so far was a 3x3:]

My poor old machine tends to lag even at 2x2, so I almost never go higher than that unless I have a specific project in mind.

I've pretty much run 4x4 embarks, and they work for me.  I'm going to be trying an irregular one next, because I have a project in mind that needs a lot more e/w space than n/s...  2x8 should be functionally equivalent to 4x4, right?

Depends on the presence of an aquifer.  I try to avoid them...

At any rate, I usually do 5x5 or 3x5.

I'm a fan of 5x5 actually.  Enormous legroom, it's amazing!  Trees for miles, damn the elves I'm building a giant wooden phallus!

That, or 2x3, as it provides a compact area to work in, but the 3 also provides a bit of range to expand in and you don't have a clusterfort.

I usually go with a 4x4 but I every once in a while throw in a 5x5 though my computer starts to suffer with a 5x5 map in the medium 200 dwarf ranges.

Would you consider me crazy if I said my favourite embark size is 8x8?
Although I never use the space I have completly, I just can't stand small areas.

Pretty much this. I sometimes modify the Cavern numbers to be 1 or 2 instead of 3 since I find the magma too far down to be useful. The FPS boost is also pretty darn amazing.
