A Vile Force of Darkness

My first ever Goblin siege is now upon my door step, any suggestions?

Planned on it, but for some reason they are just sitting on top of a hill on the other side of the a valley and not moving at all.

You can entice them in close (raising bridge) and use marksdwarves to pick away at them or you can simply wait out the seige, this may take a couple seasons until they get bored and move on

Herp derp, I did unpause it first of all and then sent my five man army to try and kill them, and they got slaughter killing only one goblin and wounding only one goblin.

Turtle inside your fortress, hope you've got enough lumber and food.

If you've got a farm plot, you'll never be out of food...

And if you find a cavern, then you'll probably have trees.

Just watch out for the FBs.

So yeah, in any situation, have a milita, and while you're turtling, build one up.

Or if you get access to magma, go Boatmurdered on em.

And if you don't, go WeaponTrapSpam all over the inside of your doorway with menacing spikes.

Build a few Goblin Grinders. As long as they don't have any trolls, a few of these can take a small handful of weapon traps and turn them into almost all the defense a fortress could ever need. (You will still want a military though, as I've found that every once in a while a fast goblin still manages to escape the grinder into the fortress)

Oh god, I don't know why but I found that hilarious.

Anyways; The reason you *probably* got sliced into pieces that are more bitesized that your average dwarf is equipment. Did you give them armor? a helmet? a shield? I know when I first started playing, I raged because my military of 15 dwarves got brutalized by 5 goblins, and I swore up and down the war system was broken and impossible to beat. Now, I regularly take on armies 2 or 3 times my size and take very few, if any, losses. It's all about being able to get ''But the blow was deflected'' instead of ''The severed part sails off in an arc!"

What spiraldementia said.

My last fort I pushed my luck and had a rag-tag band by the time of the first ambush, which was three lashers and an axegoblin.  In 40d, my tiny militia would have done something, and if not my woodchopper and miner could pinch-hit.  But not in the current version.  Instead, the goblins methodically slaughtered every dwarf and the livestock.  Except one.

They did have armor, they all had shields, helms, and at least copper breastplates.

If you don't have one yet, build a danger room.

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!
