You tear your vision away from the light, little red spots dancing in your vision.
You manage to extract a sample of the metal from the ladder with a bit of jury-rigging, as the sample/extraction gun is really only designed for use on organic targets. You combine it with a second blood sample and some reagents to make a Ferrous/Ferrous Elixir.
The hatch itself is badly dented, with a few small round puncture marks from below. There are traces of some powdery white material lining the punctures.

There isn't nearly enough of the powder to extract a full sample, but you can tell it contains high traces of osseous elements.
With some effort, you wrench the hatch open, and the strain snaps the hinges clean off. Apparently, it only looked sturdy.
Climbing down the ladder, the only light is provided by your Light Sphere.
The rungs are close-set, slick with condensation, but deeply set into the walls.
After what seems like hours, you finally reach the bottom. Looking up, you see a faint green pinprick.
The alcove you're in opens into a large cavern, lit brightly from above.
Planted or sculpted or arranged or something around the cavern are bizarre constructions, like yucca plants made out of bone. Rows of broad, flat diamonds overlap at floor level, rising up to nearly waist height, and from the centers, high, curving stalks with pointed, javelin-like “flowers” brush the ceiling. Everything has the grey-white, pocked texture of old bone, the stalks sporting femur-like knobs, the flat diamonds resembling scapulae locked and interlocked between ribs. Some of the plants have sent out runners, long, slender threads that look like articulated ropes of phalanges, terminating in miniature versions of the adult plants. There are enormous doors set into the far wall.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

The ceiling itself seems to be glowing, brightly enough that looking directly up is painful.
You carefully creep towards the closest plant, sample/extraction gun at hand.
You extract a sample from the plant, diving to the side as the flower whips out at you. Unfortunately, dizzy from blood loss, you don't roll far enough.
The spike of the flower punches through your ribcage, and the last thing you see are the leaves blushing a beautiful crimson.
You've met a horrible fate, haven't you?

You find yourself in a room. The air vibrates with a steady thumping that shakes the dust motes floating in the flickering, greyish light.
The tang of old metal and salt fills your nostrils. The floor is chilly, and gritty with flakes of rust. Broken rainbows glimmer in a pool of oil to your right.
An arm-length piece of chalky bone is loosely held in your right hand, tipped in a wicked spike.

This room looks exactly like the first one you found yourself in, right down to the broken floor grate. The water level is only about an arms length from the floor, and chunks of ice slowly float by.
You open up and drink down the Ferrous Elixir. Almost instantly, you are strongly aware of your heartbeat and entire vascular system. Supernatural vitality surges through your veins and muscles as your skin darkens and thickens.
The rusted out hinges of the door are no match for your augmented strength, the tortured shriek of tearing metal temporarily overwhelming the rhythmic thumping in the air. The hall way beyond is unlit, and stretches to both sides. Doors like the one you just tore off line the corridor.
Foraging in the ankle-deep grit and sludge is a crab the size of your torso. Arm-length spines jut from its back and the back of its claws.

Charge the crab, stab it with the bone spike. Stab it a lot, if needed.
