EVERYONE HAS BLED TO DEATH!
« on: October 05, 2011, 09:18:34 pm »

So at the moment, it seems like a large number of my dwarves are dropping dead from blood loss.. but it's been a while since they've had a fight. The Forgotten Beast that was last fought had 'deadly blood', but not all of the guys that are dropping dead from blood loss were in that fight. Now, with all these dwarves dropping dead in the hallways (not even going to the hospital), my population is going nuts with tantrums.
Any idea as to why this is going on.. or am I just screwed?

I had something similar happen a while back - the dwarfs who were in the fight got the deadly blood on them, then they washed at the well or walked through the waterfall, which sprays the blood all over nearby surfaces. Then other dwarfs or animals walk through the blood and pick up the syndrome.

Dwarves who don't wear shoes (because they wore out) and step in the contaminant will step in the contaminant.

Just out of curiosity, what actually seems to be happening to them? Is it necrosis? Can necrosis make a dwarf bleed to death? Or is it like, blisters?

Its probably a syndrome that doesn't infect those who wear shoes, like Mister Always said. I would say if a Tantrum Spiral has started going full swing, you will have to do something very clever to block off the contaminated area and keep your dwarves from killing each other at the same time.

Contaminants, and especially blood, track everywhere. This is why setting up a dwarfwash of some kind is important.

In my experience, some syndromes don't even have the decency to go through normal disease vectors.  They just cause extremely fast exsanguination, without anything else.  And yeah, its probably from a severe shoe shortage.

You'll have to make shoes *and* draft the entire population into squads with uniforms consisting of shoes, set to be worn even when off-duty, if you want to use shoes as the method to save them. Walling off anywhere with the monster's blood, or using a burrow and a civilian alert to keep your dwarves away from it is probably the more immediate solution.

Make sure the legendary dwarves go into the first "wear shoes" squad, so they get priority on life-saving footwear, if you go that route.

Blood being tracked everywhere by dwarves walking is actually off by default these days, but it still spreads if it gets into the water, or when dwarves wash themselves at the well.

Also, add gloves/mittens to that uniform to prevent being contaminated by hauling items.

Boots and gauntlets are better if you can get them. They don't wear and can't be owned. I have cloaks and hoods and dresses for about 90 dwarves in a clean fortress, and keeping track of what needs replacing soon and what can't be used (which I don't actually do, thank you DFhack!) is a pain in the butt.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
