I cried manly tears when my fort died...
« on: October 05, 2011, 08:31:48 pm »

My ultimate plan worked. I recruited everyone in my 200 dwarf fort after getting enough adamantine and steel to equip everyone. I then opened hell and stationed my military in the 3rd cavern. 100 demons came, and a few valiant Forgotten Beasts joined the fray along with some goblin prisoners. Everyone died one month later when the second wave came.
But after that, I had to shed a single tear of reminiscence. How about you guys?

This is Dwarf Fortress. Where torture, enslavement, and murder are not only tolerable hobbies, but considered dwarfdatory.

Every Fortress lost is like a little pinhole through my heart. It may be small and unnoticeable, but that doesn't mean i can't feel it.

Damn i'm poetic.

As someone who's survived aforementioned fun with 13 military dwarves and a little application of ingenuity, I can honestly say it usually isn't all too hard to survive the first wave, especially if you get lucky with the demon raws. The problem comes from the tantrums afterwards, moron hunters going to hunt demons and dying or killing and people going to claim items, etcetera.

I got tired of my best fortress; it was invincible. It was also in a place which meant sieges were rare, as it was surrounded by mountains.

So I opened up hell without setting up traps; everyone died on the second wave (first died to my army). I had an adventurer collect some of the adamantine armour and weapons after the fortress fell and managed to escape the demons. Then HE turned into a cakewalk...

Actually looting demons isn't a bad idea. You can get some valuable (and boast-worthy) stuff down there.

The only bad part about it is, ya know, dad hired a few clowns for the party.

I brought the boardgames.  Fun was had by all.  That said,  You ALWAYS want a strong military before you go picking cotton candy.  Learning that the hard way now.  Damn Pterosaur and Rat Monsters... >.>

Anyway I'm too foolish to beat hell into submission. I can never time the cave ins properly AND my military usually consists of 8-10 REALLY good guys :p
