But you can change or affect the situation.

With enough iPhone, iPod, and iPad purchases, you can bring Steve Jobs back. There's an app for that. There's always an app for that.
That app may require several virgin sacrifices on all hallows eve, which is conveniently coming up!

Any volunteers for said sacrifices? I'm ineligible.

Yes, it's hard to be a sacrifice when

YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD.

Oh wait you meant about the virgin part. I found it more amusing to imagine an oversized Bruce Lee clone standing over a satanic altar.

Well, given that article, I'm willing to retract my "was a decent person" defense from early on in the thread. Still not particularly glad to see him dead (I doubt it changes anything).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

This is somewhat relevant and interesting.

Thanks.

I was aware of all of this stuff before Job's death.  It didn't feel right to bring it all up, but I really think it needs to be brought up, considering the type of idol he is becoming and how much people are trying to emulate him.  Not really a good thing for someone with such a serious dark side.

However, I have learned some good things about him that I didn't know before he died, such as his involvement with Pixar... which is rather puzzling in comparison to all the other work he did.  He was completely hands off with Pixar.  Just threw money at them and did everything he could to give them creative freedom... totally the opposite of what he did everywhere else.

It takes a REALLY big jerk who manages to do that.

Though uhhh... I am confused now. The thread has somehow almost went to the complete opposite and is almost taunting Steve Jobs. O_O

Taunting? That wasn't my intent. I just don't like this whole "Well Steve is dead now, let's all pretend he was a nice person forever."

He did good things, he did bad things. He certainly wasn't a saint. He was certainly a marketing genius, but I think he cared more about his company and image than the people who worked for him.

He was a great businessman and a terrible human being.

Though I haven't been monitoring the rest of the world, I have to repeat that he (or his memory, at least) is definitely suffering more brickbats than plaudits in this thread, plus adding insult/injury* to injury/insult* by suffering comments about how all the rose-tinted glasses should be shattered.

* - Delete as inapplicable.

(Consider me reactionary, on this issue, as I'd probably be equally repulsed by the thread going all lovey-dovey over his memory and at the same time complaining that everyone was using his legacy as a live-fire target.  Although I admit I'd probably be a bit less abrupt in any such assessment, especially as not being a user of apple stuff (not even iTunes, and I've definitely fallen out with quicktime) I'd probably check myself in case I was particularly biased in that direction, as well as obeying the general practice of not speaking ill of the dead.  So the "all pile on" attitude I see surprises me a little for a figure who isn't actually at the mass murderer level of perceived morality.)

Jobs: at least he wasn't a mass murderer.

That good enough for a eulogy?

A bit short.  Maybe the epitaph, however.

Well it is kind of true, I was thinking it when the thread started, but I didn't want to piss on the guy's grave.
That said, I think it's time everybody moved on, Steve Jobs is dead, the world turns on, and everybody moves on, and I think we should too.
So let's just let this thread die, ok?
