Not since Apple software turned into malware worse than any virus I've ever dealt with (and I've been online almost daily for 15 years).

Care to elaborate on this (with examples, please)? I have never heard anyone say that Apple software has become virus-ridden, nor have I experienced it myself, despite owning the same Mac unit for nearing a decade.

It won't appear so to anybody that actually uses a Mac and all its associated software.

But try installing Quicktime or iTunes on a Windows unit, and then uninstalling it... it doesn't work.  It also does its best to interject itself whenever you try to use other audio/video software as long as its around.  You might as well throw away your hard drive.  It's stained forever.  Most Windows users I've mentioned this to have had the same experience.

Disclaimer:  I have actively avoided anything associated with Apple for at least 4 years, so maybe things have changed in that time.  I'm not taking the chance to find out.  Last time, I got so annoyed with it that I did a thorough format and re-built my windows set-up from scratch.

I may not have liked how he ran things, but he made many innovations to the way we interact with computer, both on the Mac and PC, and it is a sad thing when anyone is killed by cancer.

It's true. I managed to "uninstall" Quicktime once. It left a dozen registry entries behind that broke future attempts to reinstall it on the occasions something called for it, when I didn't know what alternatives I had available. It persisted until I spent an afternoon hunting them down, pulling ownership shenanigans to allow myself to delete them, and finally getting rid of them. This was on the old computer, though, so it's been a few years. Easily more frustrating to remove than any virus I've had to deal with - the only viruses trickier so far are the ones I don't know I have.

That said, Mr. Jobs was a pretty cool dude and while I don't appreciate some of his company's attitudes in the past few years, and my school system has left me with a deep hatred for all things Mac (although, points to the company for donations to schools), he was a pretty big influence on the computer-based world I so love. And, as far as I'm aware, he didn't commit any atrocities, so for that reason alone his death is a sad event (like everyone else who meets that criterion, but we generally don't hear about because of the whole scale thing).

That said, I don't think his death is of such significance as to warrant the time it's apparently getting on what are ostensibly news networks, but whatever. I think it's the rare death, indeed, that warrants more than a 1 minute announcement and, if you're feeling fancy, maybe a short obituary type of thing.

Fun fact: News organizations write obituary packages well in advance of a public figure's death. (And by public figure I mean politician, celebrity, rich people, ect...) I imagine they must have put together fairly large pieces on Jobs as early as 3 years ago.

So to them, this is a chance to show off their production skills.

Well, I have to admit that he's one of a few people who have made a very unique impact on the world by making computers a consumer item.

I suspect many millonaire philantropist organizations are pretty much a tax-evasion scheme, though. Create a NGO, make a huge tax-deductible donation, and then pass your superyatch, your expensive travels around the world, and your decadent lunches as "representation expenses".

Not to mention what philanthropy actually is if you think about it....

Handful of people own the resources everyone needs to survive.
They only share those resources if you pay them.
You only have money to pay if you work for them.
If you work for them, you get paid only a fraction of what you generate.
Wealth flows up and consolidates further into that handful of wealthy, resulting in less money circulating over time.
The only thing the wealthy can do to keep the system operating is to give money away, but this isn't a bad thing for them.  They get to look like heroes for their philanthropy, and it just comes right back to them anyway.

Steve Jobs created and saved Pixar. For that he is an swell guy by my book.

I imagine they must have put together fairly large pieces on Jobs as early as 3 years ago.
They would have first compiled a draft obituary decades ago, and simply updated it every now and then.

I always thought he was smug and intensely dislikeable, but in many ways he was important in the way computers turned out (no to diminish the role of anyone else but you get the idea) so although I didn't like him, or the way he ran things, I'm not going to engage in the awful, disrespectful crowing over his death that I've seen over the internet today.

As for Job himself, the way apple ran his thing doesn't make me think highly of the guys. On that respect, I'd rather Google's founders.

You clearly have never used an iPhone or a Mac before. Me and my Dad used to think the same thing, but then he got us both iPhones, and later he even had his laptop replaced with a Macbook. They're amazing.

You clearly have never used an iPhone or a Mac before. Me and my Dad used to think the same thing, but then he got us both iPhones, and later he even had his laptop replaced with a Macbook. They're amazing.

Guess what, I used both. They are meh. And VERY overpriced. The only thing they are for them is that they are improvement over windows systems, who are downright terrible, and easier to use that other UNIX-like systems. But it's generally not worth the price, except if your time is really precious. And that you have no invective to learn a bit of informatics.
