I wanted to make some joke about the start of the "Steve Jobs isn't dead" conspiracies, based on that post....but I figured it was kind of in bad taste. Gotta pay some respect to the King of Nerds.

And there's always tomorrow.

I STILL find it weird that the second someone dies and criticism and faults that a person was known for instantly evapourate...

As if people would rather remember someone for what they joy they brought them then by their devilish faults

Well damn, that was fast.

Seriously. Either he was working right up to the end, or it advanced on him rapidly.

He had been fighting pancreatic cancer since 2004.

Grim. I personally despise Apple products and their marketing with a passion, but Steve himself was a cool guy, who knew how to get his audience interested.

Also, my friend posted a link to a news article about it, and the thumbnail was the Microsoft logo. I don't know whether to laugh or sigh.

Agreed.  I hate Apple's vendor lock in strategies and extreme prices, but they do make good products and Steve Jobs absolutely knew what he was doing to turn Apple around from the brink like he did.  Respect where it's due.

I don't like Apple that much, but you have to give Steve Jobs some credit. He really changed the whole portable music industry, even if it was an overpriced change.

I'd like to think it's taking a moment to remember that they were a person, faults and all, before the inevitable pile-on happens and they become a legend, a bogeyman or a punchline.

Ugh... I don't mean to be disrespectful, but... well... I guess Apple did change the industry a lot... technically... it just didn't contribute anything.  Mp3 players had been around already when the iPod came out.  There were plenty on the market at the time that were better in every way for better prices.  They just didn't have flashy silhouette dancer advertisements.

Yeah... Steve Jobs are more of a marketing genius (somewhat) then someone who actually improved society.

Think of it like World of Warcraft. It wasn't the first MMO, or the best MMO, but it was the MMO that brought the stuff mainstream.

Steve Jobs took things that already existed, beat competators with iron bats and other illicit activities, and made MP3 players trendy.

Your ignorance of the man's history is showing, badly. He along with Woz were the quintessential self-made geeks, what every geek aspires to. He and Woz wrote operating systems then sold them out of their garages, and built a respectable chunk of the PC industry you're enjoying right now (even it's not on an Apple.)

I would think, of all places, that here people would look past the marketing and the BS and see the man, at least for minute.

Nah, I may have been exagerating on what I said. I just didn't want to come in here and say "I DONT LIKE STEVE JOBS LOL".

I don't have a lot to say that's nice, so I'm not going to say much.  I have as much respect for Steve Jobs as just about any CEO.

My first computer was a mac, and in my teen years I bought into the image of Apple as the scrupulous underdog being trampled underfoot by Microsoft's monolithic clout and unfair business practices.  I still hang onto the idea that once upon a time Apple was the more respectable competitor.

However, I haven't had a positive opinion of them in a long time.  Not since Apple software turned into malware worse than any virus I've ever dealt with (and I've been online almost daily for 15 years).  Not since they started turning trendiness into a science, and influenced the entire mobile electronics industry to follow their lead instead of focusing on functionality.

I pay my default respects to the man as a human being, but my thoughts are mainly on what an interesting week it will be on the internet.  I expect a lot of clashing between rabid Apple fans and those who will take this opportunity to take shots at Jobs in bad taste.

I am aware... I admit, it's really easy to forget this after everything they've done over the last 10 years.  He does deserve some respect for being one of the original elite computer geeks.

Edit:  Sorry for double-post.

Care to elaborate on this (with examples, please)? I have never heard anyone say that Apple software has become virus-ridden, nor have I experienced it myself, despite owning the same Mac unit for nearing a decade.

He means annoying features in Apple software (eg it's lock-in policies) rather than it being literally virus-ridden.
