Is this save useless? (causes instant cave-in to hell)
« on: October 05, 2011, 05:51:07 pm »

I just started playing dwarf fortress. My first fortress died after a year because of no booze and no food. Second one died of no food. Third one died of no booze (apparently I don't learn very fast). I'm starting my fourth fortress, I spent an hour finding a location and preparing carefully (I probably didn't do a very good job at it however as I am brand new to this game). I pressed embark and the first thing I get is a notification of a cave in, followed by having found adamantium, followed by a notification that I had broken into hell!
Is this save useless or will the monsters not be able to climb out of the giant hole in the ground? This is the second time in a row that something like this has happened to me (and yes, these were two different embark sites). Is this kind of thing common or am I just that unlucky? Thanks

Unlucky? What are you, some kind of elf? Did the initial cave-in kill some of the clowns?

If something like this happened on one of your embarks, the whole world probably has similar problems/blessings.

I just started playing the game. I'm having a hard enough time keeping my dwarfs from starving/going sober! I think that demons will be too much fun for a noob to handle.
Also, why would it mean that the whole world has similar problems?

Also, how do I post the save? Can I post the file on this site or would I have to go to a different site? Thanks

What I would do:

Go into [dwarf fortress directory]\data\save\

Put the "World#" folder for your fortress (if it's your first, it'll be world1 for example) in a zip file (in XP, right click the folder -> send to -> send to (compressed) zipped folder).

Upload that to the site given.

Provide a link to the download (the site will give you a link when you finish) in this thread.

While I'm waiting for the file to upload, what exactly is in the world.sav file anyways? Just curious.

Edit: I've uploaded the file, this what you guys need or is there any other info I need to upload? http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5019

Err, Region1, my bad.  Not world1.   You seem to have figured it out anyway.

Anyway, the folder that I directed you to has a set of .dat files for the world (contains data about the world), a set of graphics files (if you have a mod such as Phoebus) for the world, and a set of RAW files for the world, which are text files that contain its rules for your world (making it easy to mod the world).

It's possible that your world was corrupted during generation - such things seem to happen rather commonly under Linux, for some reason, and often result in things like adamantine spires. If you regenerate the world using the exact same parameters, you'll probably find that everything is "normal" at that same region.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

1. How do I find this information?
2. the limit on the size of uploads to the site is bigger than my region4 folder (I think that this is the folder that has all the info I need), why don't I just upload the entire folder? It's 29.4 MB in size

The site won't allow that size? We need that folder.
